    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have enjoyed working with Orbitsound a lot as it has been a new challenge for me to develope not only my business and sales skills, but also my confidence and proffesionalism. It isn't a sit behind a desk role, instead it is a face to face role where you are speaking to the public and most importantly utilising your sales skills to try and gain some commission. This job is great for anyone whom wishes to get out of the stereotypical retail environment and move onto something a little more challenging.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Working at Orbitsound is like building a new friendship group, I have received happy birthdays and general interest on what I've been up too. You feel very involved in the business as everyone's given a fair chance and the managers are in contact with you daily to make sure things are going ok. A great example is the head of sales is only a call away and if you need tips he has help in the past, that's there shows compassion and care of the employees.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Seeking guidance in Orbitsound is like no other job I've had as you can ask any manager/ supervisor for assistance at any time. If you have any problems then you can call or Whatsapp your manager and within minutes you usually have a reply. I have also been invited to London to train with other collegues and managers which really boosted my skills and knowledge. In Orbitsound you're not thrown in the deep end, instead you're developed as a both a person and salesman to be the most efficient seller you can be.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In the holidays seasons this job can be very demanding. The days like Black Fridays and bank holidays you will see almost double the customers you usually serve on a normal weekend. Usually I serve around 40/50 customers a day and spend as little as 2 minutes with them to 30/45 minutes. The only time I get to busy with is when John Lewis don't have enough partners on the floor and I get mistaken as a partner instead of a Orbitsound rep who sells soundbars.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my time at Orbitsound I have been given the role of running sales at that store. This has given me the opportunity of moving speakers around, teaching others staff about the business and products. I have also been given the responsibility of coming to work on time and making i fulfill the contracted 15 hours and weekends and selling the minimal 6 units a weekend (weekend rep). Lastly the biggest responsibility is that you are the face of Orbitsound in the store you're representing so how you act and represent yourself reflects on the business which is key when being a proffesional.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I study a Ba(Hons) in Events and Leisure Marketing so the job has given me an insight on how a business advertises a leisure (speakers) in a retail environment. This has showed me how the product is marketed (through ourselves the Reps) and how it can make a huge difference in the difference of sales if for example a rep isn't it there. I have also gained some sales skills from training days in the Orbitsound HQ. I feel when it comes to my final year in my dissertation I can relate back to this job and explain that how a business like us utilises Reps to drive sales. I feel that the skills gained will go a long way with me and will transfer over to my next career in marketing and sales.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My environment was John Lewis so the environment was very friendly and proffesional. The atmosphere was always busy but somewhat relaxed as the customers are much more time friendly than other customers else where who want to rush. The other employees and managers are also very friendly and helpful if you need there assistance. Even through to the stock team they were willing to take some advice I had about putting stickers on the orbit sound boxes. Generally the atmosphere is quite fun as there's always a bit of music playing, sport on or movies trailers so there's never really a dull moment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The job has been very organised so far and not one pay day has been incorrect or missed yet. Everything that has been needed has been posted to me or discussed over the phone and nothing of my knowledge has been missed. This is all due to the communication throughout the business. Lastly anything needed is always quickly notified and and change is usually done very quickly.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have had one training day in the HQ which I leaned an awful lot. This day included everything in making a sales form the introduction, the rapport, why?wheres? To the close. I came out of the day with so much knowledge i had to have a paper copy to make sure I remembered it all. After that I also attended twice a week an apprentice call where we would spend 45 minutes on the group call discussing this weeks topic and learn about it then develope those skills till finally you learn everything needed where then you would attend the proffesionals call.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If the right job was to pop up i would consider working for them again in a different role. The business values are what should be in a business. The business has some really great opportunities to offer like earning non capped commission, free training days, competitions to boost motivation. The current role is great for being a student but when I finish my degree I would want a position in marketing for the events hosted or the product itself.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, we have a Whatsapp where we all stay in contact and have a group chat. This is used to ask for tips and tricks, issues regarding customers or stock, and finally things like competitions and m whos winning. We also have a bit of banter on the group chat and have some Feirce competition. The social scene is pretty ambient and is mostly lively on weekends but it feels nice working alongside you're collegues without being with them.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in Bournemouth is pretty cheap as because I'm a student in exempted from paying council tax and only pay £79 a week rent plus bills. The area is also surrounded by many super markets so food isn't too costly. Travel in the area is a little expensive and can cost me around £5/6 to get to work a day. Socialising in a the area is cheap as club entrances can be a little steep costing £5 but drinks range from £1/2.50 and some nights entrance is free before 12. I wouldn't say it was cheap as chips but it's affordable.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life in Bournemouth is one of the best in country as there's a multitude of clubs, bars and restaurants. There's several award winning clubs which every week have a celebrity appearance. Cameo which is a super club has 5 different rooms and dance floors which cater to different genres of music. They have been awarded the purple flag in Bournemouth which represents a good and safe night life.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really apart from nights where we are rewarded for winning as a team in our region. The only things outside of work would be the calls from other mangers helping us with sales techniques on selling doubles and triples with the chromecast audio. If your team team wins the competition you are rewarded with an all expense covered night out usually bowling, go karting etc.
