    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my Internship as the people at PageGroup were warm , welcoming and the majority were always on hand to help me if I needed it. Although certain jobs could be tedious at times - as with all jobs- the interesting elements outweighed the dull elements. I would have liked to be more client facing as I feel I was capable of talking to a range of Clients rather than spending the majority of my time calling through Candidates.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like I was very useful , as I was given tasks that were beneficial to the company and reduced my colleagues volume of work. I was always told how helpful I was being as well as being included in team activities and social events. There were certain individuals who always made the effort to make me feel comfortable and valued as well as picking up on times where I looked lost, low or stressed.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had two managers and a Director as my first Manager went on holiday during my Internship. All of my managers were approachable and helpful. I was particularly grateful of the time and effort my Director gave me, as although she was incredibly busy she always made sure to check in with me and see how I was getting on. One of my Manager's were very keen to listen to my feedback and act on it , he worked on a give and take business relationship which suited me well as I felt he was trying to meet the needs of my Internship experience. I always felt like if I had a problem I had someone to talk to and to help me solve it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy on my Internship experience as I constantly had lists to call people and cover them on jobs , as well as arranging interviews , arranging the work night out. Although I was busy I would have liked more to juggle rather than being busy with the same thing and therefore if you are someone who gets bored easily it probably isn't the right setting to go into. At this company , if you ask for more you may be given more however it depends on the person you are working under because some people may want you to focus on only one thing.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a lot of responsibility in terms of being left alone to call through people as well as get people's CV'S across for the Client to view. As well as this I was given the task to arrange interviews alone and also solve problems alone such as if somebody was to pull out of an interview. I will add, that if I needed to help someone was there to support me with the extent of help ranging from individuals. I took responsibility for myself in terms of making sure all the work I did was documented and completed, doing extra work and solving my own problems. In some respects there was the occasional moments of second guessing however it was never anything too challenging.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have learned have been invaluable because it has taught me to push back and not be a "yes man" , I have developed my confidence my professionalism and my work ethic . All these skills are transferable into my degree and life itself. I have had the most practice with people skills and office politics which has woke me up to the working world enabling me to be more prepared for the working world. Finally my Internship has taught me a lot about myself and my values as well as what I do and don't want in my career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • At the start of my Internship it was very lively and full of fun . Unavoidably , when it got stressful the atmosphere died down a bit and things became a bit more tense. There was the occasional whispering going on which I suppose happens in most work places. In general and the majority of the time people were happy, friendly and lively especially when there was team building activities or a night out to look forward to.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The booklet was well organised with a clear structure to follow however due to staff shortages in the office my team and manager digressed from the booklet. This wasn't a huge problem however it did mean that at times I felt I hit a plateau , where I wasn't progressing and I was just doing the same thing day after day. There was only one point where I was uncertain with who my manager with due to handover not being as clear as it could have been but the company acted quickly and I was soon assigned someone. There were several teams in the one team and so it meant I was rotating but it wasn't clear who I was working under each week and so I had jobs thrown at me from all angles which was quite unsettling.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Some members of the company were very keen to develop my skills and took the time to train me however for others it seemed like I was helping them without getting any benefit myself. This meant that I had to keep asking to try new things and sometimes my feedback was not acknowledged. For the individuals who did invest in me I was very grateful as they listened to me , evaluated me and fed back to me with how I could improve meaning that I felt I was developing. The first section of my internship was dense with training and then it died down , I would have liked more training about the sector I was in as I sometimes felt a little lost and unsure.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This would be an organisation to be employed with as the people are fantastic however it is a job that requires a certain lifestyle to go with it and so it is something to consider when applying. After doing your homework and finding out from employees what it is like to work full time it gives you insight that the internship can't such as how many hours you work, how much pressure you are under, what you may have to sacrifice, what the basic salary is. In terms of recruitment companies I think they would be hard to beat due to the culture of the company being very lively and sociable. I think that I could do recruitment however I am not convinced it fits in with the life I want outside of work such as time with family , extra hobbies on top of work and the level of fulfilment I would get out of it.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I have met a great friend who is another intern and we are both very similar which has been comforting because if there has been any wobbles there has been someone there who is going through it too. My colleagues were so much fun and I am really going to miss them especially the one's who have spent a lot of time with me and made a real effort to help me and for that I am very grateful. I was very lucky that whilst I was at my internship the Euro's Tournament was being played which brought a lot of fun to the work place and lead to work nights out. If you want to work in a place that makes you feel welcome and included put this one to the top of your list.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I had to pay for lunch and travel but aside from that it was not too expensive and the fact I was being paid for my internship meant I wasn't too worried. In terms of nights out I offered to pay many times for my own drink but nobody allowed me too which was very generous. For corporate events the company pay for most things however it is always good to offer some money even though you will probably be refused it.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I was based in the City there was lots of opportunity to go on a nights out and there was more than a few occasions where we went for drinks after work. I was also lucky enough to organise the work night out which commenced my last Thursday of working with the company. Apart from this , it did die down a bit after the first few weeks but in terms of the location there was always an opportunity to go out.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Apart from the social events that included drinking , not really.
