    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship from start to finish. Each day was well organised with lots of opportunites to get involved in various items of work. You are welcomed into the team and made to feel like a valued member from the first day with a very relaxed working environment throughout the internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was made to feel like a real part of the team throughout my placement. I felt like Hymans Robertson aims to get you as involved throughout your internship as possible. The interns were invited out to social events outside work hours as well as being able to attend the A&B annual away day

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a People Manager within my team, who was my first point of contact within the team . We had regular catch up meeting to go over my progress and how I could best meet the aims I set for my placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The beginning of my internship majority of time was spent being introduced and attempting various types of work. I was often given work by members of my team to work on with enough notice that you never struggled to meet deadlines. The later weeks more time was spent working on your summer project

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I believe I was given a great amount of responsibility during my placement similiar to that of a new graduate. I was involved with a client work on a daily basis which also involved emailing and phoning clients.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel I have learnt more about the relevant skills to becoming an actuary from the eight weeks placement than you can a degree course. You are given the opportunity to develop your communication abilities both from presenting and talking with clients.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was a very welcoming environment with an open plan setup. People were friendly and always happy to help each other.Hymans Robertson creates an environment where as an intern you feel like a member of my team. The open plan nature of the office means partners or actuaries. both have the same desk and resources available to them.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The summer internship is very well organised. HR are in contact with you from start to finish. Prior to starting you are given a timetable of key dates for the eight weeks such project presentation date and training at start of the placement. HR also had a catch-up meeting and exit interview with all the interns to get feedback on how we felt the internship was going.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt that Hymans Robertson invested a great deal in the internship despite being there for only eight weeks, I was given the work of a new graduate and expected to deliver work of a high standard. Throughout the internship you are encouraged to attend all the training sessions put on by colleagues to improve my commercial awareness and understanding of the firm.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would absolutely love to work with Hymans Robertson. The decision reagrding being offered a graduate job comes down to a meeting between intern leads and humans resources who look at both your work over the eight weeks and a learning log which you complete over the internship.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was end-of-month drinks and celebratory events during my intership, I was able to attend a practice Away Day which was a great opportunity to get to know colleagues that you hadn't met until then. Their was a large intern group in the Glasgow office this gave us opportunities to talk about our placements and socailise outside work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I commuted to the office each day the cost of doing this was reasonable and the office is very close to Central Station. Glasgow is not an expensive city for socialising depending on where you go and the employees usually had places that they would always go to for social events.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Glasgow has a great nightlife and therfore lots of opportunities to socialise with colleagues throughout the internship. The Hymans Robertson office is located directly in Glasgow city centre and therefore is very close to bars and restaurants.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were often events organised by the social committee during my internhip. I was able to get involved in 5 a side football after work during my internship this was organised by some of the employees.
