    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was working in the actuarial private team in the Edinburgh office, on a day to day basis I had a range of small tasks and larger projects to work on. The larger projects I worked on included updating a TV model, completing an Intern Project (which included a presentation at the end), and a group data collection project which I completed alongside other interns. We also had the opportunity to help with lots of other client work throughout the internship. No two days were the same and we had lots of opportunities to learn new things and tasks to get involved with.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • One of the skills I have developed the most on my internship is Excel, I used Excel a lot to complete day to day tasks and there was lots to learn. We had lots of support to develop our skills including training sessions in the first week and access to online training courses. I also developed my communication skills through the end of internship project, where I presented the findings of my project to members of my team. Alongside developing and learning new skills I have also learnt lots about different types of pension scheme, GMP, annuities etc.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • We were given lots of responsibility during our internship. All the work we completed was for real clients and was meaningful and helpful for the wider team. It was nice to know the work we were completing was important and all of our work was checked and reviewed before being released. We were also given lots of responsibility in terms of managing our own time, projects and deadlines, ensuring we ask what level of priority every task is and that it is completed in time.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • We received lots of support and guidance throughout our internship. Before we started our buddies reached out to us so we knew what to expect on the first day, and they were there to ask questions to throughout the internship. We also had a couple of days of training in Glasgow in the first week, teaching us the foundation knowledge required to be succeed in the internship. We also received a number of online training courses, and we could complete extra ones in areas we found more challenging. To add to this everyone in the team was incredibly friendly and welcoming so it was very easy to ask questions.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was fantastic, it was a very supportive environment and everyone was very friendly and welcoming so it was easy to ask questions and speak to people. There was a nice atmosphere in the office with people from our team coming in every day, but there is also the option to work from home if you need to. There were also lots of team lunches and office events which were nice to get to know people in the team better.

  • I really enjoyed my internship, the people at Hymans are amazing and it was great fun to come into the office everyday. I also enjoyed the variety of tasks and projects I had the opportunity to be involved in, no two days were the same and I was always learning something new. • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Hymans Robertson
  • The advice that I would give to others applying to Hymans Robertson is to learn as much about the company and role as you can before you apply. If you have chance the insight event I went to before I applied was really helpful and gave me the opportunity to speak with people who worked here and find out more about there day to day tasks. My final piece of advice would be to put time into your application, everyone who is interviewing you will want you to succeed so just try your best!
