    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Extremely interesting and challenging work. The process was well managed and any questions, queries or requirements were dealt with easily. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work I was doing was relevant to the business and, as a result, my colleagues valued the work I was doing. I received honest and constructive feedback on all of my work and was allowed the freedom to explore the details of anything I found interesting. This made me feel that my opinions were listened to and taken on board going forward. Everyone was also exceptionally welcoming.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Any issues, questions or requests were dealt with as soon as they were brought up. I could not have asked for more supportive colleagues, both in and out of my team.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On the whole, the level of work I was given was excellent. This was partially due to the freedom to explore any relevant options or details of the work I was doing and partially because my colleagues made a real effort to loo for suitable work for me to get involved in if I asked.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given plenty of responsibility, particularly on the project that I was given. My colleagues promoted a culture of competence, allowing me the space to get through my work without feeling under pressure while allowing me to probe them for further information or guidance when required. This made it easy to finish my work to a standard that I was able set while still performing the work to the required specifications for the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have developed a number of extremely important skills during my time here, namely planning and organisation, structured self and peer assessment and presentation/communication skills. These are extremely useful skills in all avenues I may follow in my studies and in my future career. Additionally, I was allowed the opportunity to learn, in a more academic sense, about the financial world as a whole. This, too, will be useful in every day life, particularly in a career which requires even a minimal amount of financial literacy.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was very friendly and dynamic. Everyone has an excellent sense of humour and are willing to joke and chat while not sacrificing work ethic. I was made to feel a part of the team, which allowed me to join in with the humour and good chat during my time here. Additionally, there are a number of social events, meetings and presentations which make it easy to integrate with staff of other teams.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • From start to finish, the placement has been extraordinarily well organised. The human resources department were quick to respond to the application and I was informed at every step of the selection process about what would happen next. On the first day of the internship, we were given timetables for any and all events that were relevant to us. We were encouraged to ask any questions if anything was unclear (paperwork, work we will be doing etc.) and after an introduction to my team on the second day, my project was well explained so that I could begin work as soon as I felt comfortable. There are a number of people who are directly involved in the internship process, allowing you easy access to ask for further information if anything is unclear. In summary, excellently organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The interns were allowed the opportunity to attend any presentations that were available during our time here. I was also given free reign to investigate anything that was unclear or interesting to me, and everyone in the company was very willing to explain, in an understandable way, what work they carried out and its wider relevance to the business. I was even afforded the opportunity to learn about concepts and processes in different departments of the office such that I could achieve a wider view of the operations of the company. In this sense, and in more, the company is truly excellent at investing in the development of their staff and interns.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would absolutely love to work with Hymans Robertson. It is a very structured and interesting career, and the work is excellent. It was also made clear at the beginning of the internship that the company is growing and, as a result, make an effort to hire from the pool of interns and, more widely, graduates. Consequently, I feel that my experience here does allow for employment opportunities in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The staff of Hymans Robertson are very sociable and friendly people. There are always regular and one-off events being organised which allow excellent opportunity to socialise, including end of month drinks and breakfast clubs.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was working in the Glasgow office of Hymans Robertson, which is close to where I live. Glasgow has many places to eat and drink which range widely in pricing, so there is something for everyone! On some occasions, the company paid for social events, like lunches or drinks, for the office.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Glasgow has absolutely loads of bars, clubs and restaurants - there is something for everyone!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The company has a number of sports, social and wellbeing related activities, ranging from hill walking and running to hockey. It is easy to get involved in these activities. Additionally, the end of month drinks and company events are an excellent catalyst for socialising with the rest of the office outside of work.
