    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was great, very well organised, the company itself has a great atmosphere and I found the actuarial work very interesting. Definitely would recommend applying.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the employees are extremely friendly and welcoming. When completing the work, most people will thank you and provide you with feedback on how to improve next time which was extremely handy.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • You are given a people's manager who supports you generally with your well-being, making sure you have all the opportunities you would like to cover (such as working in different departments) and keeps you on track. You meet with your people's manager once a week for a catch up which is useful to track your progression. You are also given a buddy who looks after you- this is generally a student.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work tends to come in peaks and troughs. Whilst at first I was relatively quiet with work, but as time went on my workload rapidly increased. There will always be someone in your team who can delegate work to you!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A fair amount of responsibility. Such as working independently at times or working on a project however all work at Hymans will be thoroughly checked by two other employees.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I read actuarial science and mathematics at university, this internship was directly related to the work I was doing at Hymans. Also my project work helped me to understand the pension industry as a whole which was not only interesting, but it also aided me to keep up with current affairs which is vital.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great, everyone is very friendly and the atmosphere is very different to another corporate office. It is less formal and manages to maintain a great ethos throughout all departments.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well structured. You are provided training to familiarise yourself with the systems online and understand the basic concepts of the pensions industry. The internship project is relatively well structured and thought out as is any other work you may do across other departments.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Hymans are great at encouraging you to improve and develop your skills hence you have a people's manager who is assigned to make sure you get the maximum opportunities to explore different types of work and use a number of different system or even client interaction of some-sort. Hymans take the time out to organise lunches or presentations to make the interns understand the different sectors and also provide a number of internal training schemes.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would recommend Hymans as a future employment option as they have many opportunities to progress through your career ladder (they support you with material and pay for your actuarial qualifications), you gain a great scope of work, many opportunities to expand your working scope in terms of the work (DB and DC) and the opportunity to work with a variety of people (students, qualified actuaries, partners and those across different departments).

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • You will always find something to do after work! Hymans is a very sociable place to work, there were team socials, treasure hunts around London, rounders, a boat party and drinks at the pub after work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As Hymans is located in central London the cost of living and socialising is relatively high. However as the internship is a paid employment it will cover any expenses or costs.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Central London as expected is a buzzing city hence the nightlife is not at all shy! Whether you are interested in going to a bar or club, Hymans is located near St Paul's Cathedral and are sure to find something to keep you preoccupied in the evenings.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • As previously mentioned, Hymans Robertson is a very sociable place to work hence there are always opportunities to involve yourself in a variety of activities outside work (such as sports.)

    5/5
