    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My day would normally involve developing code to control robots and to learn more about new systems and how to integrate them. I would take this knowledge and provide insight into meetings to more senior engineers to help create informed decisions. I would also visit sites across the country to assess their capabilities for our new developments and how best to work around any existing limitations. I would also liaise with international teams to make the best use of knowledge from various experts.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed various skills that have helped me progress through projects efficiently. Some technical skills I have developed are my CAD and software programming skills and have learnt new skills with regards to the design, maintenance and operation of aircraft engines. I have also developed skills such as working with specialist teams and making the best use of their expertise. I also learnt how to provide training on equipment I have been working on and developed.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement and was very enjoyable. For instance, I was the representative systems engineer on a major project which involved setting up and arranging tests and new features for a new maintenance system. I trained on various robotic systems as well as engines during my placement and became certified so that colleagues could ask me for information. I was able to visit sites and represent the company and arranged and demonstrated developments to high level executives.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received great support and guidance during my placement from various engineers and my manager. Whenever I had a question, someone would always be keen to help. I also managed to learn about future job roles and careers at the company as everyone was happy to talk about their careers. I never had an unresolved query as both in-person and online support from the company was prompt and usefulness. I found that this was really reassuring for me as working in industry can be very different to university and I had many questions when I started.

  • The culture was very friendly and like a big family. Everyone knew each other and you would always have opportunities to work with everyone. They were very supportive and always there when you need help. They were all very specialised and experienced and always were happy to share their skills with you. We had post work events and we would also celebrate events such as birthdays together in the office. I thoroughly enjoyed working there with the whole team.
