    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Joined existing client teams within the company, completing similar work to the new graduates such as transfer values and funding updates. Regularly attended team catch up meetings with the rest of the client teams, as well as weekly meetings with my people manager. There was also a large amount of training sessions in the first couple of weeks to learn the basic knowledge we would need for the rest of the internship.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Developed my organisational skills, having to learn how to effectively prioritise work to ensure it was completed by the relevant deadlines. Also developed my presentation skills as I had to complete a final presentation at the end of the internship. I also developed an understanding of how pensions are calculated and learnt a lot about the actuarial industry in general.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Given a lot of responsibility early on in the internship, being involved in actual client work from the second week onwards. I was regularly expected to complete work by myself and (once checked) send it to people outside of Hymans. This was very rewarding as it allowed you to see how the work you completed was actually being used.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received plenty of support, the initial training sessions were very thorough and gave us an excellent overview of what was expected of us during the internship. I had weekly meetings with my people manager where I could raise any concerns that I had and when asked to complete work, I was given detailed instructions on how to complete it and had the opportunity to ask further questions about it.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very welcoming and friendly. Despite the fact that the internship was conducted virtually due to the Covid 19 pandemic, I felt very welcomed into the company. People were very willing to pick up the phone to answer any questions I had and the initial induction sessions were structured to allow us to meet the other interns.

  • I really enjoyed the internship. The company culture was very friendly and welcoming which allowed me to quickly settle in. I really appreciated the amount of responsibility that I was given from early on in the internship and the variety in the work that I was given, as it provided me with a good understanding of the work I would be expected to complete were I to rejoin as a graduate.
