    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • During my internship I did a mix of project and client work. I had the opportunity to work on an independent intern project, which culminated in a presentation at the end of the 8 weeks. I got to work with several client teams doing individual calculations, funding updates, factor updates, and more. I assisted with the production of several reports, and got to sit in on internal team meetings.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I have definitely developed my project management skills, also problem-solving, communication (especially being honest and direct with colleagues), and organisation. More practically, my Excel skills improved and I learned how to perform various tasks at the level of actuarial trainee consultant

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I felt I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was given real client work to do, which was very motivating, but there would always be somebody checking over my work which took away the pressure to get things absolutely right first try. I had responsibility for my intern project, but again there was a team who I could ask for support from at any time.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I felt the level of support and guidance was excellent. I had several points of contact within the firm, such as my intern buddy, my people manager, my project leader, and my team leader. The firm also has a very friendly atmosphere and everybody I worked with was always happy to help/answer questions

  • The internship was virtual due to the pandemic, but despite this Hymans managed to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Everyone was very dedicated and professional, but extremely friendly and happy to chat and answer questions.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Although I found some parts stressful, overall I had a really great experience. I entered the internship with an interest in an actuarial career and left certain that I wanted to pursue it, so I don't think there's a better indication that I enjoyed it than that!

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Hymans Robertson
  • My advice would be to be completely honest about your previous knowledge and experience. They are looking for people who are driven, have good communication skills, are willing to learn, and enthusiastic. They don't necessarily expect a background in actuarial science!
