The Role
I really enjoyed my time at YouView, one of the best summers in my life so far. The people and the atmosphere at YouView is great which is what made this experience a lot more enjoyable for me. I will miss YouView and there is a very high chance they'll be hearing from me again.
The colleagues were very friendly and provided great help if I ever ran into some problems or needed advice. After the initial few weeks it felt like I was no longer an intern but was part of the team I was in. I found people were more and more interested as the placement progressed in my opinions on problems and the solutions I had in mind. Sometimes developers would ask for my advice.
My two buddies/supervisors were great and made the atmosphere really enjoyable and relaxed. If I ever had any issues or problems, my supervisors always tried their best to help and give advice. Aside from weekly team meetings, I frequently had one on one meetings with one of my supervisors just to talk about any problems or questions I had.
Working in an agile way meant that the tasks I was set varied on a weekly basis however overall it was the perfect balance. Sometimes I had a lot of tasks built up to complete for next week and often I would finish my work before the deadline and take the time to learn a new skill or work on an extra feature.
I was very surprised by the amount of responsibility I was given. The list of responsibilities was endless from writing and modifying test cases to deploying a web application live and it being used by various staff members from different teams. I also had the responsibility of organising a charity event towards the end of my internship.
The skills I have learned at YouView have been very valuable. In terms of technical skills, YouView uses the latest and most up to date techology stack so no doubt I will be using some of the learned programming languages and frameworks in the next years to come. I have also obtained the industry skills of creating software as part of a team which is not possible to get at the university.
The Company
When I first joined YouView I was surprised how relaxed and chill the atmosphere is as long as the work is done. My team was very sociable and we would often all go have lunch together and frequently play games during lunchtime. Everyone was very positive and overall it made the experience a lot more fun!
The internship was organised really well. From the interview process which was seamless to actually taking part in the internship program I always knew what I was supposed to do, where to go and the next steps. YouView also hosted hackathons and days where you would spend studying something new that you always wanted.
YouView had various free resources such as LinkedIn Learning which would normally come at a cost for a regular person outside of the company. The large amount of learning material meant that I was able to learn anything I needed to use for my work. If I didn't understand something after trying to figure it out by myself, my team would always provide help and assistance.

YouView management made it clear that if I was interested in coming back next year for a graduate position I was very welcome to for the junior/graduate roles that they will have. Some interns have stayed for multiple summer internships and were welcome to come back for another internship while they were still in full time education.
The Culture
The other interns on the same placement as me were very friendly. Some of them I become really good friends with and in no doubt will stay in touch. We would often go have lunch together and socialise. One of the most outstanding social experiences was the yearly summer party which was fantastic and very enjoyable.
The office is located in central London which is a great location but with a higher cost of living, however the placement was very well paid which meant that there was no issues of finding a place to live in during the summer and I was able to frequently socialise and do various activities with my friends.
The nightlife in London is always known to be the best and with access to tube and train, the evening/night activities and new experiences are endless.
The were countless and endless opportunities to get involved in activities. For example, every Monday the office played football after work.
