The Role
I feel that my placement was a total waste of time. From the first week it became quite apparent that the company invests nothing in you as an Industrial Placement Student, and if you're lucky, you just get given the most mundane tasks that no one else wants to do. You are expected to be grateful for being given paper filing tasks!
You will occasionally hear comments such as 'oh, you're the intern then' and 'how long do you still have before you leave?' . No one trusts you as an Engineer, no one cares about your learning or development.
The guidance and support was close to zero. They make you feel that you are a massive burden and that it is an unearned privilege that you work for the company. You are used as a scapegoat whenever something goes wrong. A very toxic blame culture!
Either extremely busy, or have nothing to work on for days!
No actual real responsibility. The work that you do is not visible, not value-added, just a repetitive chain of data entry tasks!
I truly regret joining the company. I would have been much better off without doing the placement. I would discourage everyone from joining.
The Company
Extremely political, toxic, full of blame, where everyone is just looking after himself, especially with the way the ranking system works!
Apart from the handover at the start, there were no clear agendas or objective on what you should do, or what you should aim to achieve.
Whenever you bring up the topic of training, development, learning, you get a response along the lines of 'just get on with your work.' There was no personal training, and no tangible development that I felt throughout the placement.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Its well paid, apart from this I see no reason why would anyone want to join this ageing, depressing, dreadful place.
The Culture
Southampton is not expensive compared to other cities.
