    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Once you got to know the place the work was generally rewarding as it wasn't fake and would have been done by another engineer had you not been there.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The office I was working in was very friendly though this would obviously vary office to office, generally people were interested in you as a significant number students from the internships get job offers.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Each group has a project supervisor and a project owner, both people are interested in the outcome of your work and support you accordingly.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The project was a little slow to start and so the last week which involved the write up was a little more rushed. That and on this placement you will also be part of a committee, to either organise the end of placement ball, organise weekly social events or make a video log of the placement to show to future potential applicants. These commitments along with work mean that if you're not good with time management you may struggle.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Though the work was real it had no immediate impact and due to the nature of working on an oil refinery no student there for only 8 weeks would be given any responsibility. With this in mind you were treated like any other worker in arranging meeting and had a free reign to investigate any problems you faced.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Extensive health and safety culture as to be expected in this sector which will stay with you for a while, the computer skills I picked up on specialist software will again stay with me and hopefully be used again if I work in the oil industry

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A good balance, but it is an office and you are expected to work

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Almost seamless very few and minor hicups on the way. They've been doing this for a while and you can tell.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • You were heavily invested in as it is a recruitment process.

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • My placement was just long enough for you to get to know the people you would be working with and what the job would involve, and I'm looking forward to starting there next year!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A large group of students (19) were on the course and you live and work together so plenty of things going on.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Southampton was reasonably priced to go out, and the newforest is just next door for the out door types. Exxon also provide you with a social budget, and events are organised by the social committee, for us these included cycling in the new forest, gokarting and a day trip to Go Ape to name but a few. Though they're not free they were heavily subsidised!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Southampton isnt the nighlife capital of the UK.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • If you wanted to get involed there was plenty to do anyways

    5/5
