The Role
The work wasn't technical enough for me as a mechanical engineer. There are interesting technological developments going on in the industry but gaining exposure to them while you are on placement is tough. You create your own projects out of the work you do and that is the most enjoyable aspect because it gives you the creativity and freedom to explore different ideas.
The department was very welcoming and you definitely develop working relationships and friendships at work. Once you prove that you have something to bring to the table, your skills are relied upon to support the entire department.
The supervisor system is only flawed by the mismatch of supervisors to students who are on placement. If you are fortunate, you will end up with a great supervisor as I did. Really encouraging and engaging, they will push you to develop.
Fairly busy. There's always something you can find to do that will be useful.
Ownership of projects comes with the responsibility and this is where you will develop most. There won't be someone looking over your shoulder for the projects you run and you will learn about what it is you are doing.
Soft skills were developed significantly more than technical skills while I was on placement. These are useful regardless of where you end up working and will set you apart as a graduate later on.
The Company
Generally positive and friendly. There's always someone to talk to or to get help from apart from the very busy times of the year.
Reasonably well organised. More guidance and official communications would have been useful.

The Culture
Social scene was very strong. A placement committee (chairman and treasurer) is formed who organise events throughout the year. Then most Friday nights are spent out.
Relatively inexpensive. Offset by a good salary.
Very strong. Southampton nightlife is great.
The Day of Caring is a charitable day where workers go out to help with various charitable projects in work time to support the local community. This was one of the best experiences.
