    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Hymans Robertson, I felt like I was providing valuable assistance to my colleagues and I also fell like I've became a part of the team. The workload I have received throughout the internship has been really satisfactory. The people I work with were incredibly supportive and I was never too scared to ask any questions. Despite not studying a degree that is similar to the department I was working in, colleagues all made the extra effort to ensure I understand everything and took the time to explain anything I do not understand.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues from the moment I started the internship. Everyone was incredibly supportive with each other as well as to me. I felt valued because of the amount of client work that I was trusted with from the beginning. Also I was always credited for the work that I completed for colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given massive amounts of support by my supervisor throughout the internship. We would meet up weekly to discuss about my progress and also discuss any problems I might have had during the week. I also had a learning log that I update weekly and my supervisor will have a read over what I have written and we will have a discussion about any progress with that too.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depending on how much client work I received, I can range from a fairly quiet day to a busy day filled with meetings and client work. But whenever I was quiet, I would work on my summer project. As the summer project is an important piece of work, there were also days where I only worked on the project in lieu of client work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a very high level of responsibility given the risks involved with my department. The level of work I received is very satisfactory, with a big range of clients. I was also allocated a summer project which I was totally responsible for, where I was expected to work on it over the 8 weeks myself.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have improved massively on many skills throughout my time in Hymans Robertson, I have drastically improved upon my Excel skills, where I no longer just know how to add and subtract. I have also developed organisational and time management skills which will be incredibly useful for my final year in university as well as for my working life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is incredibly casual and laidback, no managers or team leaders is segregated away from the rest of the colleagues so everyone sits together. Everyone is very close to each other and so a conversation can be started up very quickly. Regular tea breaks also helps breaks up the long sitting time and encourages a bit of socialising.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall internship set up was incredibly efficient and very good. Training was organised for me for the first two weeks ensuring that I have a good company background knowledge as well as the sufficient Health and Safety knowledge e.g fire escapes, meeting points. I was also provided with training throughout my internship to further my knowledge and I was given an intern lead who would supervise me throughout the 8 weeks and provide support when required.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company organised a Skype call with a staff member in London who taught me Excel in greater detail and this helped my summer project greatly.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Depending on the department and your performance, you might be offered a grad job after your internship. I am unsure about my position as I am still in the middle of it, but I have spoken to colleagues who started as grad students and have since worked their way up to a team leader.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was end of month drinks at the end of every month, this allowed me to socialise with colleagues and also allowed me to socialise with fellow interns. At the start the interns would have lunch together and discuss our internships. There was also a team building exercise where we were put into teams and would go around Glasgow on a treasure hunt before stopping at a bar for drinks.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Glasgow has the more expensive parts as well as the cheaper parts. It all depends on your preference but you can almost always find a great place for a reasonable price. As most colleagues are from Glasgow, it can be as simple as asking a colleague where to go out for food or go out at night and stating your budget. Cost of living is quite good too, there are two supermarkets within a 5 minute walk from the office which is very convenient.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As Glasgow has many universities, going out can be incredibly cheap during the week. There is an abundance of nightclubs and bars and there is usually a particular nightclubs that is doing special promotions on a particular day. Glasgow is known for its friendly atmosphere and this is also reflected when going out. Going out at the weekends can be a bit more expensive but you can still spend minimal money if you find the right places to go.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are hiking opportunities as well as pantomimes that Hymans Robertson organises, however they are all happening after my internship so I did not personally have much opportunity to get involved.
