    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed the internship. I was exposed to a lot of client work as well as being given my own personal project to work on when I had spare time. My team were very welcoming and made a great effort to get to know me on a personal level.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued. I was initially worried that I would not be trusted with much and would spend my time making cups of tea. This however was not the case and through being proactive and asking if colleagues needed help on anything, I was given lots of varied work to do.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I sat next to my intern leader and could (and regularly did) ask questions about anything I was stuck on or just wanted a bit more context on. In addition, I had a 'formal' catch up meeting each week with my intern leader to discuss how the internship was going. I was also encouraged to approach and seek support from other colleagues and the atmosphere at Hymans definitely promotes this.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some days were busier than others depending on how much client work I was helping out with but I was never once left feeling bored or as though I had nothing to do as I had my personal project which I worked on in any spare time I had. I was also encouraged to speak up and ask for help if ever my workload got too heavy.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was exposed to a large variety of different work throughout the internship. I was given the responsibility to work on lots of client work and also attend meetings and join conference calls with senior members of the firm. In addition, I was given the freedom to work on my personal project how I felt most appropriate.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was encouraged to ask any questions I had about technical terms or jargon which helped me develop my understanding of the investment industry as a whole. This understanding was also deepened by seeing a lot of things I had read about in theory, practiced on a daily basis. This knowledge will be beneficial for any job related to investment.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very open and friendly. I was encouraged to approach and speak to people of all levels and everybody would set aside time to answer any questions. The office was also very social and people had clearly developed relationships on more than just a working level, aided by the regular events put on by the social committee.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement overall was very well organised. I was given an induction pack on my first morning containing my agenda for the first few days and attended lots of 'welcome' sessions designed to provide a smooth transition into the firm. The personal project I was given had clearly been planned in advance and was very interesting and relevant.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • 5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A lot of the interns met to have lunch on a regular basis. As well as this, the social events in the office also promoted socialising amongst the interns and after events such as end of month drinks, the interns regularly went to the pub for a drink afterwards as well.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • There are expensive areas of Glasgow and there are cheap areas. Through asking people with local knowledge it is very easy to find cheap places to go to. There are lots of supermarkets within a 2 minute walk from the office so it is easy to go and pick up a sandwich from one of these for lunch.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 5/5
