The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at keystone lintels. Several visits to places and parties have made time in keystone very valuable and enjoyable. I got to learn a lot about the construction industry and how it worked. This will be very valuable in my future engineering career. The people at work also made it very enjoyable to work at keystone lintels.
They did not treat me like a placement student and gave me the same jobs that a qualified engineer would get. Everyone at work also treated me like an engineer. Like every engineer I was told to pick up calls and answers customers requested. This showed that the jobs I was given was not tailored to a placement student but it was the same to anyone regardless if you a student or an engineer.
From day was training was provided to work effectively and efficiently. On my first week I was told to shadow another placement student that was working at keystone for a year. This was really helpful in the first week to gain a lot of knowledge form the student. Regular training sessions for different parts of the company was also provided.
The job made you really busy. The roles included proving quote to the customer, handling calls, sending / receiving emails and helping out customer with any query. With all this to do on a daily basis, it was a busy atmosphere. It was really fun though as the day would pass really fast as I was enjoying the work.
I was given the same amount of responsibility as any qualified engineers at Keystone Lintels. it was enough to keep you busy and enjoy the work at the same time. Sometimes the workload could get a lot and it would get stressful but it was part of the job and it made me manage time bit better.
The training I received has definitely developed my knowledge of structural engineer and specially the use of lintels and wind posts. This will assist me in my further degree as the skills learned will be applicable to my future modules. In regards to my future career the team working experience will benefit me to work alongside other colleagues.
The Company
It’s a very fun and at the same time hardworking atmosphere. The people make it very fun to work at the keystone lintels and several birthday treats also help lighten up the atmosphere. Any colleague is happy to help when help is needed and the manager is only 2 desks away.

With the introduction of graduate scheme for fresh graduates it is very appealing. The graduate scheme will provide further qualification towards charter engineer or integrated charter engineer. This has really appealed to me and who knows I might even come back. With added benefit of meeting all the colleagues the company has an appealing future prospects.
The Culture
Cost of living was fairly cheap as I was living in with a landlord. But it is a little difficult to find a place near the company and if you do find a place it is a little expensive. In terms of socialising there are not much places around. Have to either go far or to burton to find a nice place to shop or for a decent cinema.
The night life near the company was not so great. The closed proper club was in Burton and it was dead even in the weekends. The places to go were Birmingham, Derby and Ashby. It was a bit far and if we were going we would have to book a hotel which could get a little expensive.
