    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • In the summer of 2015 I completed an internship with a large company in the automotive sector. I enjoyed my time there and expected Lloyd's Register to be similar. My expectations were far off. I have been amazed at the organisation and structure of the internship. At no point did I feel lost or not sure on what I was doing. Opportunities to travel to the London and Southampton Offices, as well as evening socials and lunch and learn sessions, has given me an insight into how well this company values graduate development.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • People at all levels of the company have given me huge amounts of respect and time. Seeing how this company treats its employees, and especially its new starters, has blown me away and positioned LR on the top of the list of companies that I would like to work for.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have enjoyed every bit of my time at the Liverpool Office. The team that I have been working alongside have been welcoming since the start. It is hard to believe I have only known these people for 8 weeks. The surveyors were always keen to offer to show me new things about the role, taking me with them and explaining the different tasks they deal with. My line manager Mike Williams has been a huge help, constantly making sure my time here has been maximised and that I have the opportunity to see as much as possible.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most days I would be out of the office either inspecting ships or visiting factories. However, during rare quiet periods, the team project that had been given to the interns could be used to stay busy. Unlike most internships, boredom was not an issue here.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The interns had complete control when completing our project. After the project brief was given, we were free to start work on the project in any way we wished. The trust given to you by the company from the first day is very rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have had several opportunities to apply my technical knowledge. As I study Mechanical Engineering, my knowledge of ships was somewhat limited at the beginning of the internship. However, with the help of very patient surveyors and the general understanding of engineering from my studies, I leave the internship knowing far more than I started with. Furthermore, opportunities such as presentation workshops and review stages, have helped me to feel more confident in many abilities which I feel will be reflected in my final year work at university.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Huge amounts of money, time and resources have been invested in me during my 8 weeks here. It seems almost strange that the company invests this much in interns as there is no guaranteed return. However, the effect of this is interns tend to be very impressed and wish to progress further with the company.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If I were to receive offers from all the main companies in engineering, from all sectors, I would choose Lloyd's Register to work for. This was something I did not expect when starting the internship.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Most interns were based in Southampton and enjoyed weekly social and sporting events together. Being based in Liverpool, I was not able to experience most of this. However, when I travelled down, the graduate team ensured there were evening socials for us to enjoy. These ranged from meals to a few drinks to going bowling.
