The Role
From the outset the internship was structured in a way that allowed you to be challenged but also enjoy yourself. The people working for Lloyd's Register are all very friendly and willing to help; this helps to ensure it is a very enjoyable environment to work in. Also, the other interns were great and we regularly met up after work.
All the other interns and specialists I was working with on a daily basis were very friendly but also appreciated everyone's strengths and encouraged us to push ourselves. When deliverables were reached (such as that of the group project presentation), managers were very appreciative of the work achieved.
I would regularly meet with my manager and supervisor throughout the process to discuss the work I was doing and address any problems I was having. This was really valuable and ensured you were constantly learning and applying knew knowledge and definitely something that you should take full advantage of!
Very busy, but not being busy is boring! Had several individual projects and a group project to work on - there was never a point in which you had nothing to do. How you managed your time was up to you. Although the days were busy, they were not overwhelming but usually very enjoyable.
Individual Project - Had a fair amount of responsibility and was working on a project that would actually add real value to the department. This was initially unexpected as usually for internships, this isn't the case - so this was great! Group - This project also gave us a fair amount of responsibility. Obviously 8 weeks is a relatively short amount of time, but again the work we did for this project would be used to help aid the project management department.
- Learnt knew technical skills such as coding, additional statistical modelling techniques and further developed my understanding in material science, quality control and project management - All the skills I have learned in this internship will be used in my last two years at university.
The Company
The general atmosphere was quite relaxed and people were always friendly and willing to help you. Within quite a short amount of time, everyone had made you feel very welcome and part of the team. Although everyone is very busy, if you want to talk to anyone (know matter who this is) they will usually always make time for you.
From start to finish the organisation was fantastic. From the outset there was a template on when presentations were, when managers reviews etc.. At every stage in the process the planning was excellent and we always knew where we should be and when - this was definitely quite an impressive aspect of the internship.
The company do invest quite heavily in their interns, compared to that of a lot of other companies. Not only do you get paid fairly well but they are also investing in you with regards to giving you time with some leading specialists in their field. The specialists working here at Lloyd's are some of the best in their field, so being given the opportunity to work for them and learn from them is something that should be taken full advantage of.

The internship allows you to be fast tracked for the Graduate programme; you go straight to the technical interview and then assessment centre. It also gives you an insight into what it would be like to work for the company and start building professional contacts before you have even started.
The Culture
Yes, although many of these are organised by ourselves. The rest of the summer interns were great fun and we would regularly meet up after work. You build good relationships having worked with these people for just a few months and we are already planning when to meet up again!.
I was fortunate enough to commute in from home but the other interns were saying its about £110 a week to live in the local university halls. The cost of socialising was very reasonable and the overall cost of living was definitely well below what your salary was, so this more than covered the costs.
There were many bars and clubs, as well as a large choice of restaurants to choice of restaurants. These were usually very good and we regularly used these.
Although I wasn't able to make them, there was running club on Fridays at lunchtime and football club after work on a Monday. Some of the other interns participated in the after work football club and they said it was good fun and usually well organised.
