The Role
It has been a thoroughly enjoyable year, learning a lot of new things and seeing how things progress from old to new technologies.
Personally I felt very valued by my colleagues, they did not see me as any less than an equal programmer even though I was a student.
I was given more than sufficient support by management to help me with whatever it was I needed help with, and if they could not help me, they would point me to someone that could.
On a daily basis I would almost always have enough to keep me going for the day and the days ahead, meaning that I knew that I had enough work to do in the time frame I was given.
I was given as much responsibility as every other developer on the team, my own projects to work on independently if they required.
The skills I have developed here at EdCity have been an excellent help in what can be used outside of the workplace. They have helped me see how to work on an existing code base and creating new ones.
The Company
On the whole the atmosphere of the workplace has been excellent and is very often a nice place to be. There is always the mindset of work first but there are often fun distractions that really get you through the day.
The overall placement was setup very well, you have time to settle in, and then you are another member of the development team with your own tasks and responsibilities.
In terms of external training there was not a lot, but this is because you do not need to go to external places to learn. There are plenty of other people in the company that you can usually learn from gain experience and knowledge through them.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Working from home
Healthcare/Dental
Future employment with EdCity is particularly appealing. You can often tell that when staff have been there for more than 5 years it is a good place to be.
The Culture
There are opportunities to join in with a work badminton group amongst a couple of other things, but this appealed most to me.
The cost of living in the area was adequate for me, and socializing was good. It is not a major city so we have to travel to badminton but all is reachable within 15 minutes or so.
The nightlife in Oakham is reasonable for a town, WeatherSpoons and other local pubs which are usually great. There are not too many other nightlife activities other than pubs though.
There was an opportunity to get involved in an activity with work people, but not too much else.
