The Role
EducationCity had a wonderful work environment. Everyone is very friendly and makes you feel welcomed. I worked as a Student PHP Programmer, and gained a lot of valuable skills throughout my placement.
My colleagues were very friendly and wonderful. Even some employees from other departments will try their best to make you feel welcomed and valued.
My manager let me mostly learn on my own, as it's what I suggested would be better for me. He pointed me into what I need to learn, closely monitored my progress, and gave me feedback and support whenever I needed it.
Working in an agile environment, we'd start the sprint with a lot of work, but sometimes finishing early leaving us with couple of days with lack of work. This issue has been resolved by splitting team members and workload between teams more effectively.
I was always given choice to choose whatever task I'm comfortable to undertake, which meant I've worked on the same work graduate and senior developers do. I was always encouraged to pick tasks that are new to me though so that I learn more skills.
My work as EducationCity really benefited me, and allowed me to return to my studies with a really strong skill set. It also inspired me to use what I learnt to start my own business which is going to be the next chapter in my life.
The Company
Very friendly environment. Daily SCRUM stand ups to discuss work on previous day. Each two weeks we'd review and demo work we've done the past two weeks, and plan work we're doing in the next two weeks.
It was very organised. I was the only student, so there wasn't much difference between my set up and any other employee's set up.
I was given time I needed to learn technologies I need to do my work, or anything that could benefit our work in the future.

Very appealing, the workload is very balanced, and the work environment is very relaxed.
The Culture
I was the only placement student in my year, however we used to go for pub meals/drinks occasionally.
Oakham is a very small town, not a lot goes there. I lived in Leicester and commuted daily as I thought it'd be more lively. The prices in Leicester are reasonable, however the train tickets to Oakham were a bit overpriced.
I'm not aware of any nightlife scene in Oakham.
Rarely, but I've participated in activities on my own in Leicester.
