    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It is a complete placement package as you get given a varied nature of responsibilities and projects. All the candidates(interns) are able to get inputs to the organisational decisions which are taken into account at all levels. I really enjoyed my time at Keysight Technologies and got exposure at all the business levels.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at the organisation has a massive experience and never hesitate to help or advise on any issue. This implies that the nature and environment of the organisation is very friendly and I felt very valued during my tenure at Keysight.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager(Jenny Isitt) was extremely supportive and motivated at every possible step to increase/sharpen my skills and learn more from the projects given to me. She encouraged me to think from the business point of view and thus look at the bigger picture while working on any task to have a bigger impact.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied throughout the tenure, though the projects kept me fairly busy most of the time. At any point when the workload decreased below a certain point, I tried to volunteer for more tasks to get as much as I could from the organisation. At one point in the organisation, I was handling multiple projects, which helped me in building my time management, delegation, value driven and many more skills.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Apart from the technical and other major projects that were given while I rotated in different business departments, I was also involved in various other projects such as working on internal company events(financial year launch;'Kick-off'), technical training week for the new joiners(Training and hands-on practical week; 'Neophyte') and many more events.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • All the skills and knowledge that I have acquired from this organisation will definitely help me in the future and in my final dissertation. I am now more methodical and pragmatic in my approach. I tend to look at the value of the task ahead before working on it. Apsrt from this, I have also gained many skills related to project management, quality and continuous improvement and general management.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Atmosphere was very friendly and anyone can approach anyone to discuss any problem/task.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement structure was very organised and flexible at the same time. the Manger took into account my personal interest and at the same time the business requirement to ensure everyone is getting the best value from the projects. The structure of the placement included training(both practical and theory) followed by rotation in 3 different departments(Service center, Technical support and Sales) which will have their respective projects that the candidate has to accomplish.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot! The company (especially, my manager) ensured that I am getting the best possible training (without compromising with business working). I was able to go on 3 different visits, which helped me in learning how things business is conducted outside the company premises. Also, given my interest in project management and continuous improvement methodology, she encourage me to speak to more experienced employees to learn from their methods and experience.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would absolutely love to work with Keysight in future. I have developed good relations with the managers and colleagues. I am also aware of the policies and the business model, thus it would be easier for me to adjust and get on track quickly. My manager and other senior managers are very appreciative towards my work and accomplishments and I hope I can join the keysight team as soon as I finish my MSc.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were 3 technical interns(including me) and 2 marketing interns in the company and the social scene was very good and comfortable. It helped me in getting familiar with everyone and conversing about the work and non work related topics. All the interns had different qualities and it was good to share the feedback to help everyone improve both professionally and personally.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The company is located in Reading and depending on where you live before moving to that part it can be both cheaper and expensive. For students, it is easy and practical to live in a shared house with other people(preferably other interns) to divide the cost of living. I lived in a 5 bedroom house with individually let rooms and bills included which costed in just above £400/month. Socialising is also affordable as the town center has numerous options for eating or hanging out with your friends with diverse options depending on your budget.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Keysight Technology is located in an industrial area, thus the nightlife is limited to little or no activity. However, like I mentioned above, you won't be disappointed with the town center and the clubs.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Absolutely! I was involved in other events planning outside work. This was both fun and a learning, as I had to keep a tab on the communications with the team and other deadlines. It was a great learning experience.
