The Role
As a result of a lack of managerial structure set in place, the placement was very unstable in terms of amount of work given and its relation to the student's actual expertise. Thorough most of the placement I felt that there was not any guidance at all and work review was very inefficient, mainly to do with a poor hand over from previous to new manager. Examples: line manager not aware of work given from HR, which directly impacted in the work commitment with the department. HR did not interact in a proactive way with the line managers, resulting in a power/communication struggle. Furthermore, work development in general was overlooked and feedbacks from students were mostly ignored.
Within my department (manufacturing) I felt more valued than talent management (HR branch responsible for early career's development). I was given some challenging projects to do with electrical safety control panels and the environment was more relaxed which allowed you to have an opinion of an issue and create your own problem solving solution structure. I felt very unvalued once I was told off by the early careers manager for not being able to work over the entire weekend, even knowing I gave a 3 months notice.
Line manager: Always willing to help, however, time restricted as a result of a massive cost reduction adopted by the company, which resulted in a large amount of people being fired. (7 stars) Electrical/Electronic supervisor: As a result of his strong guidance, I managed to get my projects within the department delivered. (8 stars) HR early career management as a whole: 3 stars, guidance was not shown whatsoever.
Fairly busy, mainly to do with the amount of projects that I had to handle at same time and the short deadlines.
A lot of responsibility and trust was given. I had to design and build a testing unit for a product newly created; in addition, I was responsible for making sure that a range of control panels in the manufacturing floor met the electrical health and safety directives promoted by the EU. Furthermore, I was fully responsible for promoting STEM activities within the community, including assisting local schools and creating a stand at the Cheltenham Science Festival.
It gave me a much clear picture of what career I want to pursue in the future. In terms of academic skills, it has not added anything to my skill set. However, in terms of skills set I have realised that I need to strengthen certain areas.
The Company
My office was very outgoing and had a stress-free policy as long as your work as being delivered as planned.
- Steam related courses (useful only if you are intending to stay on the field); - Emotional intelligence workshop;
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Average.
The Culture
Among 4 of us (out of 8, initially 9), a very good relationship was established outside work.
Very high, Cheltenham can be expensive.
Average in terms of nightclub and very good in terms of festivals and restaurants.
Within the department yes, lots of socials. But the company does not promote any socials.
