The Role
I spent one year working in Lumesse in a position which I am the first to fill. I have enjoyed every second of the work placement with my manager giving me as much work as I wanted and exposing me to as many new projects as I could handle.
I feel valued extremely by my colleagues and I was told several times throughout my placement that it would become very difficult when I leave due to the skills and knowledge that I have acquired in my position that are specific to the company and therefore will take a long time for any replacement to learn.
My manager and I would regularly have 1-to-1 meetings so that we could catch up and that no problems would fester and become too much for me to handle.
I was very busy but with work that I enjoyed. I am often given the option of whether or not I want to take on more projects and I decided the workload that I wanted.
I was initially hired to work under my boss and help her with the workload and have since created my own job role as a separate entity to my manager. I am now handling my own projects and working independently but she is there if I need any guidance with anything.
Over the year of my placement Lumesse has exposed me to a range of new skills and training that I would not have learned otherwise. My skills on Adobe Photoshop have advanced massively and I also learned a small amount on Adobe Dreamweaver. I often had to work with suppliers in order to get collateral created for events and at one point in my placement I was helping to organise a three-day event in the Luton Hoo hotel. Everything that I learned during this placement will be invaluable in my future career.
The Company
The Luton office is the HQ for Lumesse and so there are a huge number of people in a large office space. Therefore, there can be varying atmospheres within different parts of the building. However, Lumesse will often only hire people with a specific, positive personality and so the atmosphere is usually pretty great.
This was the second year that Lumesse had hired interns and the first year that they had employed more than one. For this reason, I was very surprised as to how well the placement was set up. Rather than it being an 'intern' group, we settled into our individual roles quickly.
Lumesse treated me like a full-time employee from the beginning. There was obviously a lot of things that, still being a student, I did not know and they understood this and gave me the training to help me.

Working from home
They are extremely appealing.
The Culture
There is a very good social scene. We have a pool table and a foosball table in the kitchen where we will reguarly play games on our lunch breaks. The interns will also sometimes meet up outside of work for drinks or nights out.
To live in Luton I paid £500+ per month in rent but the price of beer is not too expensive (If you go out in Dunstable on a Thursday night you can get all drinks for 0.80p). However, being a 20 minute train ride away from London can mean that costs of socialising can be higher if you go into the city.
The nightlife in Luton is not too great but it is surrounded by towns and cities where the nightlife is much better. These include: - London - St Albans - Milton Keynes - Watford - Dunstable - Hitchin - Bedford
My manager personally liked to frequently set up 'days out' for myself and other members of the marketing team. In my time at Lumesse I had been to Top Golf (Watford), watched the rugby at Twickenham, been to the Comedy Store in London and many other activities.
