    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the majority of my placement as I was consistently working and felt like I was improving over the year. I was also made to feel like a proper member of the team. However, the location of the office in Luton is one of the big negatives of the placement as there's nothing to do in Luton and you have to travel to surrounding towns if you actually want to enjoy yourself out of work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My department made me feel like an important member of the team and that the work I was doing was important too. I didn't feel like an intern because of my consistent workload and the respect that I recieved from my team members. However, that respect doesn't feel like it extended much outside of the team or amongst other interns.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was always available to talk to if I needed support or guidance at any point. I was always given constructive feedback from my manager on my work and how to improve myself. My manager was also extremely supportive when it came to more personal issues that existed outside of work.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At Lumesse my workload varied week by week, I always had something to do so I was never sat around not doing something but the actual amount of work I was given could sometimes be overwhelming. Despite this I felt like I was actually making a difference to the business.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was one of the only people who actually knows how to perform my role so I felt like I was important in my department. I was gradually given more responsibilities and more freedom to do my work as the year progressed. I felt like my manager trusted me to do any task given to me.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I found myself using programmes that I already had knowledge of at university, however, I wasn't confident in using the software when starting at Lumesse. Now after using it everyday during work I feel a lot more confident in it. I also developed skills that I wouldn't have from studying at university so I'm hoping to take those back with me for my final year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The company went through mass redudancies in the past few years so there's hardly anyone in on most days, but when Sales/people who work from home come in the office livens up. The lack of staff isn't a massive negative though as it meant I got to know more people than I would have with a busier office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We had an onboarding session when we first joined and we were supposed to have several workshops to help us in areas where we might struggle but we only had two instead of the original number proposed because of a dispute in the first session. The sessions we did have (Excel & CV) were informative and beneficial.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The department invests in you as they would with a permenant employee, I was offered a course when I first started which was given to the intern before me but I didn't think I needed it. In my department, if we had the budget and there was something new that you wanted to try (which would benefit both you and the company) then my manager would find a way to make it happen.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    Travel loan

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would find it difficult to decided whether or not to return to the company for a few reasons. 1. The location is awful if you decide to live in Luton. However I think the lease is up on the current building in a few years which might mean a potential move to a nicer office in a better location? 2. There would be no room for progression in my role unless the company expanded and a new role was created. 3. One of the highlights of my placement for me was the team I worked with so if that had changed I would find it difficult to come back.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • No. With the group of interns for this year there was obvious tension throughout the whole year, there was an obvious split with people not sitting together, acknowledging each other or communicating unless they had to. This is not a reflection on Lumesse but certainly made the placement harder with people not getting along. Because of this, people formed friendships with other colleagues and got to know other staff. I personally spent most of my time with permenant employees because of this and most of the social events I went out on was with them and not the interns.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Because Luton is so close to London you have London prices everywhere, including with rent. The rent was so high that I wasn't actually making any money with the salary that Lumesse offered. This made the placement harder as I wasn't actually seeing any return on all the hardwork I had done.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is none other than a Whetherspoons in the town centre, if you want to go out then Harpenden, Batchwood, St Albans or London are probably your best bet. All of these places are expensive nights out too. I struggled to find things to do during the evenings on this placement.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a quiz that was held twice whilst I was at Lumesse, these were fun events as you got to know people outside of work. The reason that there were no activities is a reflection on the small workforce in the Luton office though, and I still went out with colleagues but this wasn't explicitly organised by work.
