    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I absolutely loved my Placement year at Lumesse (Learning)! It felt like I have been there for more than a year and in a good way. A very vibrant place where you work and play. Every day is never the same which was refreshing as it made me eager to get into the office every morning regardless of the commute and the location helped to (Brighton). Who said work can't be fun.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by everyone at the office from day one. They made sure I was okay and checked up on me on a regular basis. In order to see how I was getting on day to day. This I personally felt made me feel valued and cared about which took the nervous away. As they went all out to make sure I was settled. I felt like a full time employee rather than just an intern for a year.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a great amount of support, from one to one session with my manager every week, to an assigned mentor given to me from the start. Apart from this everyone within the office played a part and helped out when I needed it. All of this support made my time at the company easier. As I felt that they was always someone that I could turn to if I was stuck. Busy or not they always found time to teach.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As a graphic design intern, you would think the work load was light right? Or doing amends? Nope, from the get go you get stuck in with a range of different projects, all with the intentions of developing your skills. So you can leave feeling you've left with a new set of skills, whilst brushing up on your old ones. The word intern isn’t in Lumesse vocabulary which was great to be honest as you truly get to experience working life in your selected industry.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a bit of responsibility depending on the project I was assigned to. For example I got the opportunity to build a full functional course for client that wasn’t done before in the office on my own! This was nerve wracking as everything was on me to make sure it went smoothly as possible and out the door on the assigned deadline all of this on a different software Lumesse (learning) normally uses to build course on. Which it did! And was applauded for my hard work and train others as this software became popular with their clients. This was a great confidence boost as it proved I had what it takes. Having said that, I wasn't thrown deep into the water, help was handed to me when I needed it. Sometimes a little responsibility is good and Lumesse knows how to balance it out

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My skills have excessively improved. I came to Lumesse as a shy student trying to find her way with a degree she underestimated and left as an adult who knows where she’s going with it. I definitely improved my communication skills and design skills all of which will be vital when it comes to applying for graduate jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is calm and chilled. To the point where you felt you weren't at work. The rule in the office could be summed up as "all work and play". The office is always packed with laughter, wide range of random conversations to singing. It really was a fun place to work at and the Brighton scenery was breath-taking especially in the summer. I wish I was there for longer!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement year was very much organised from the starting point due to a clear contract being written up and an introduction to the company and how it works. In addition to this, the work structure was clear due to strong resourcing method that outlined what you are booked to work on, the due date for a particular project as so forth.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lumesse invested a great deal when it came to development and training. They listen to your needs and go about solving it, all with the intention to develop you further as an individual. This was done quarterly in which you were given a form to fill in and discussed with your manager in your one to one sessions. This was really helpful for me personally as I got to learn a wide range of stuff I was interested in within my field. Whether it was new software or to basic communication or presentation skills, they made it possible so you can leave feeling confident and assured about you as a person.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Personally it would be an honour to work for the company again, as they made it a fun and Worthing place to work. This is due to the passion the company has for when it came to the industry they fall in which the go beyond to provide top quality work for their entire client, never settling for less.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social side of the placement was good, as there was always something happening whether is beer o clock that happens every Friday to end the week in which everyone gets together to grab a drink and discuss how the week went. To a party that seek to celebrate the end of a quarter. I questioned if I was really at work sometimes!!
