    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at Lumesse and the Business Operations made me feel like a part of their team from day one. I loved every aspect of my role and can hardly fault it. I was so lucky to be a part of many exciting projects and throughout the year I was given different tasks which kept my role interesting but also developed my knowledge of the industry. There was not one single day that I didn't enjoy coming into work which is testament to how amazing my team was. If there was a similar role here in the future, I would definitely apply for the opportunity!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. They are all really great at making sure that my work is appreciated however big or small. From the get go, my colleagues never made me feel like I was just an intern and I received the same respect as any other employee within the company.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Coming into my placement year I did not expect the support and guidance that I have received. I never felt that I was unable to ask a question. As someone that is keen to learn, I was given many opportunities to seek support from the Business Operations team and they were all happy to help and committed to helping me learn. One of the most valuable aspects of my job was the time I spent with my line manager on other team member. I had meetings everyday with my line manager and other team members and this enabled me to learn very quickly but also develop strong working relationships.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As is the nature of most businesses, there are quiet days and busy days. For the majority of my time at Lumesse, my days were extremely busy as I was given a lot of responsibility within in my role. This was one aspects of the placement that I really enjoyed. Additionally, there are also side projects such as charity events that you can get involved in organising.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a large amount of responsibility though my role as a Junior Project Manager. This responsibility was mainly through the projects that I worked on. As I developed my skill set and continued to work hard, my responsibility increased over time, which was extremely rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I can hand on heart say that this placement year at Lumesse has taught me more about the industry than my university degree ever could have. I was able to gain hands on experience and that has made my placement experience invaluable. I would highly recommend a placement as a Junior Project Manager at Lumesse to anyone that wants to develop their skill set in management. I am immensely grateful to the Business Operations team for the opportunity that have given me and everything that they have done for me during my 12 month placement. I will never forget their kindness and I cannot thank them enough.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In the area of the office that I was in, there was a great atmospehere. Everyone is very relaxed and wanting to have a laugh but as with any business, the priority is that you get your work done. I have found that I can e-mail anyone or go up to talk to other employees in the office very easily. The whole ethos of the business involves working collaboratively to achieve goals having regular team meetings which allows easier lines of communication between managers and employees. All the staff at Lumesse are friendly and I often found myself getting to know people from different parts of the business son a regular basis.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Lumesse is extremely organised with the internship set up as my job specification was an accurate display of my day-to-day role. Additionally, as there are eight other interns at the Luton office which I was based at, laptops were ready for us the first day we started so there was no wait to get stuck into work.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As previously mentioned, my team were extremely invested in my training and development and I took every opportunity I was given. Again, this was another aspect in my role that is invaluable. Additionally, during my placement yeah, the interns also received training sessions on topics such as excel and power point.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I would definitely come back to work for Lumesse now that I know how good the company is. As I am now familiar with the company, I feel that I would adjust into a role very quickly if the opportunity was to arise in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • In the beginning there was a great social scene however during the winter months this died down as the there was not many activities to do. However Luton is only a 20 minute train ride into London so there are loads of things to do on the weekend in London.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living was okay- the price of my room in a rented house was expensive however I felt I had to pay this due the other houses I saw not being up to my own standards in terms of location and quality of the rooms for rent. I would definitely do a lot of research into housing if you were to get a placement in Luton.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In Luton- there was next to none. All of the clubs were shut down long before I relocated here. The closest clubs are in Dunstable, St Albans and of course London if you are willing to make the long journey.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were activities that did take place during my placement year, such as pub quizzes and doing charity events like the tough mudder but there definitely could be more oppertunities.
