    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at HP. I was included in all day to day office activities and treated just as an ordinary employee throughout my internship. The office was a pleasant place to work at, although the paid for food offered in the canteen was poor and offered little choice.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues offered me a warm welcome and I was regularly included in group discussions and development decisions. Colleagues regularly asked about my technical opinion on various research topics. The dynamics were interesting, and often very similar to academic communities as everyone had their own areas of expertise but also eager to leverage each individual’s strengths.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As my internship was rather research focussed, the amount of supervision I received was not too different to my PhD studies. Individual supervisory meetings and group meetings occurred on a weekly basis with additional meetings when required. Apart from scheduled meetings there were regular conversations over coffee, table tennis, pool and lunch.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During my internship I was less busy than during my PhD studies, for two reasons: For this internship I moved to a new city and therefore had fewer extracurricular activities, and secondly as an intern I just had fewer responsibilities that resulted in meetings. This allowed me to effectively work 9-5 productively.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my internship I was less busy than during my PhD studies, for two reasons: For this internship I moved to a new city and therefore had fewer extracurricular activities, and secondly as an intern I just had fewer responsibilities that resulted in meetings. This allowed me to effectively work 9-5 productively.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Throughout my internship I continued to refine the skills I have used for the last couple of years as part of my studies. However as my internship was only in a related field, I have had to expand my knowledge considerably. I have read hundreds of papers and written thousands of lines of code that will remain useful in the future.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was quiet and productive, but also quite relaxed, people were approachable for questions.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was set up well, with a place to sit and a laptop available on day 1. The exact direction of the internship was developed in the first couple of weeks of the internship, as prior work motivated the project.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All development opportunities that the company offered were available to me.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be happy to work for this company in the future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Quite a few colleagues live centrally and socialise after work. There were also a few office socials during my internship which were organised well and great fun.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As the office is on the outskirts of Bristol, the cost of living is lower than in the centre, however there are fewer socialising opportunities close by.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is no nightlife at all near the office, however Bristol does have a good night life scene in the centre.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was no activities organised by the organisation, however there are sport clubs and other opportunities available in Bristol itself.

    3/5
