The Role
Working for such a huge global organisation has been absolutely fascinating. I had no idea that I would learn so much in my placement year and would recommend it to everyone.
I felt like a very valuable member of my team, and had many responsibilities that extended beyond the marketing department, meaning that I was able to improve my networking skills. I didn't feel like I was on placement and really felt at ease with everyone that I worked with.
The team were great at drip-feeding responsibility. I had a month-long handover with the current placement person which really helped get my head around the organisation and my role. When I felt comfortable with my workload the team were great at giving me additional responsibilities which kept my interest in the job role and increased my accountability which was a great motivator.
As mentioned above, I was given more responsibility when I was comfortable with my workload. Towards the end of my placement I had a little more time on my hands although can appreciate that the new Placement person would have had a lot of catching up to do!
I was given the responsibility to order stock for all of our UK Restaurants as well as manage one of our external agencies that supply a document sent to +90,000 individuals.
I attended proof reading courses, IP workshop days and other training courses on communication and writing. These courses were quite interesting, however the Marketing Team days are by far the most fun and allow you to get really involved - think The Apprentice or Dragon's Den...! I would definitely recommend anybody thinking of taking a placement year - especially at such a huge company. I honestly don't understand how people are expected to be able to write a dissertation without having a year of work experience. I didn't really understand the relevance of a lot of things that we learnt in the first 2 years at university but now everything seems to make a lot more sense as I have had the practical experience of it.
The Company
The Marketing Department is great fun and you get to meet a lot of new people, especailly as we have a lot of external agencies that we work closely with (they also each have their own Xmas party which is a lot of fun!).
The placement is well organised - I think it would have been very interesting to spend one afternoon each month shadowing another member of the marketing team working on other promotions.
Think I covered this a little before...

The Culture
I lived with 3 others doing placements in different departments which was really good fun. There's usually + 10 placement students each year and it's great to be able to mix with people doing the same thing as you. I'd say that the Marketing Department are one of the liveliest departments in the company and they are really welcoming so make the most of your year!
I lived with 3 others on placement at McDonald's. Our flat wasn't incredibly nice but was quite cheap for London. I would recommend looking near the office as it's a lot cheaper than central london and is quite handy for work - preferably get a house on the nightbus route home.
25 mins to Leicester Square, 15 minutes to Camden... Expensive though comapred to uni!
I'm not a very sporty person, but I know there are McD's football teams etc. The department quite often go for nights out - especially for people's birthdays or leaving do's.
