The Role
I really enjoyed my year at McDonald's it gave me the opportunity to work in a team and gain new skills. The job role could be challenging when dealing with customer complaints but it was always rewarding. The team always made me feel welcomed and I would thoroughly recommend it.
I felt valued by the team and appreciated, they were encouraging and thankful for the hard work put in on a daily basis . Initially busy times though some hard work did go unnoticed but this improved as the placement went on and was only down to the sheer volume of work. Overall though I
Managers were always there to support throughout the placement year making sure everything was going well. We had performance meetings half way through and at the end of placement which helped me to aim and achieve new goals. It also allowed me to develop in areas that needed some improvement.
It was a very busy year on placement due to the volume of customers and restaurants contacting the department on a daily basis. I was never short of anything to do but this was good as I was never bored during the placement. As the placement progressed I undertook more roles to make sure I was always busy.
I was given as much responsibility as I could have been during placement and after the first half was able to take on new roles and responsibilities such as replying to customer contacts formally. I was also given the responsibility to train new members who joined the team which made me feel like I was a trusted team member.
Having returned to university I have seen the advantages of taking a placement, it has made me a lot more focused and has made me want to achieve more. Along with this the skills I have learned are skills for life and I can use them in any jobs, it has also made me feel more confident when applying for graduate jobs.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was always positive, you could tell everyone enjoyed working there and their jobs. Colleagues were always friendly and made new members of staff welcomed. Everyone in the office was interested in each department and what was going on. Was always a lovely and cheerful place to work.
The work placement set up works very well at McDonald's. The interview process works well and gives you a look into the business and then once you join the induction days are a good way to get to know the other placement students and how everything works. There is always constant support if you need it and it is nice that there is many different placement roles.
Whilst on placement you could take two course outside of your department to help further your training. These are beneficial.
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
As there were 25 placement students there was a good social scene, we often met up, went out and arranged events. Many placement students lived together and this was arranged on the induction day. I would advise living with other placement students as it gives you more of a chance to be involved in social meet ups. Along with this the team I worked in was very social and always inviting.
The cost of living was expensive but this was expected in London. It was hard to save during the year as once rent, bills and socializing came out the wage there wasn't much left. However making the most of London and the location is a must so I wouldn't let the cost of living put you off.
The Nightlife is good in London but again expensive. However the local pubs around the office are also good and we spent a lot of time there during the year. There are many places to choose to go out to though so you are never short of anything to do.
