The Role
Very enjoyable placement. Excellent organisation, challenging work, friendly and sociable colleagues and East Finchley was a nice place to live / work.
Being part of a smaller department gave me the feeling my work would be more impactful on the overall success of the department.
A lot of independent working during my placement, as the majority of the Corporate Security Department are field based. That said, support and advice was available upon request, and members of other departments were friendly and willing to assist me in any queries that I might have had. Security colleagues and managers were available via phone + e-mail for non-urgent queries.
Varied. My role was more 'reactive' rather than 'proactive'. The amount of work which I completed on a daily basis depended heavily on the events in the wider organisation, and specifically security related issues.
Independent working meant that my work was often not sense checked. Communications I made were occasionally to senior members of the organisation on behalf of the security department.
I received an abundance of training whilst I was on placement, and developed vital skills needed for graduate employment. I developed skills that will enhance my academic performance in a generic sense i.e presentation and report delivering skills. However, I am unable to find many skills / training I gained at McDonald's that will help with the degree I am completing (Business and Financial Management).
The Company
Dynamic and fast paced; friendly and helpful.
Initial training given in my first week. Successful handover period with predecessor, regular review meetings with management.
Initial training given to all Industrial Placement students when they first start with McDonald's. I then discussed with my manager my hopes and expectations, and from this he enrolled me on a number of courses based on my specific requirements. I was often included in team training sessions also.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
No mention of future employment.
The Culture
McDonald's took on around 30 Industrial Placement students during my time. So there was always something happening / being organised.
Cost of living was reasonable. East Finchley was quiet. Easy access to Bars / Restaurants on the Northern Line and Central London.
East Finchley didn't really have any form of night life, you would have to go into Central London.
