    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the internship, I met people from across the business and was given a good range of tasks and responsibilities. I had independent work to focus on, tasks that aided my team, sat in on meetings, went for client lunches, visited Lloyds with underwriters and visited law and adjuster firms that XL Catlin correspond with.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone who I have encountered during the internship seemed to have a genuine interest in my development. When I wanted to find out more about underwriting, I was very impressed with how many people from different lines of business came back to me offering me some shadowing opportunities. The friendly environment at XL Catlin shows how everyone is valued.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was really impressed with how supportive and accomodating my managers were throughout the process. They always they stressed how important it was to ask questions if I was in doubt and they actively looked for tasks for me and invited me along to meetings so I met new people.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Naturally days varied in how busy I was, but the objectives set out at the start of my project helped me stay focussed throughout. Plus my project was an ongoing task to fall back on when things were quiet.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the peak of my responsibilities I drafted reports which were actually used and I set up a new case which will be used in the future handling of that claim.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The experience helped me develop my networking skills as I met a great number of people from different departments and indeed professions. The claims internship gave me a great grounding into the technical aspects of claims management, but I was also able to explore the underwriting side of the business - so all in all I can confidently say I have gained a solid insight into the industry.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was very friendly, approachable and accomodating.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well strucutred. Clear objectives from the start gave me a sense of purpose and focus from day 1.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Opportunities to attend meetings, client lunches and client offices meant I could harness my interpersonal skills, so in this regard XL Catlin was very good.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The internship exceeded my expectations, I enjoyed working here and would welcome working here again. We will have to wait and see!

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • In our first week we were invited to the Summer Party which was a good way to meet people in the early stages. Initially good social events were arranged with people on the grad scheme at the moment - a shame this type of event didnt occur more!

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Luckily I commute from home, I don't think I would have been able to afford to live in London otherwise. Being in the heart of London was fantastic, great variety of bars/restaurants to explore and easy access to travel.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Great variety in London, slightly limited on an intern wage but very enjoyable.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Given the short time I was at XL Catlin opportunities were limited, did however show my interest in playing football but unfortunately no games were running whilst I was there. Also invited by my manager to play cricket outside, so definitely some good opportunities if you are keen.
