    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Macmillan Cancer Support. From day one everyone was warm, welcoming and made me feel like a valued staff member. At the end of my internship I felt I had achieved my objectives and managed to secure a full time role.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Macmillan were very welcoming from the start. Initially they set up an intern induction day where we were able to meet other interns, learn about Macmillan and the various departments. Previous interns that had gone on to secure full time jobs gave up their time to give us advice on making the most of our internships, which I found particularly useful. Once I started my internship I was given specific tasks and projects that were both interesting and challenging and was not left to just carry out trivial tasks.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager during my internship was very good at monitoring my objectives and ensuring that I met them. We would meet on a regular basis to review my progress and my workload. The intern and placement manager at Macmillan was also very welcoming and extremely helpful during my internship, especially with regards to job applications and interview practice and maintained good contact throughout .

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My line manager helped me set up a workload document which she was able to review, this enabled me to monitor my projects and helped ensure I had a good workload balance. This was also extremely useful in interview as it enabled me to remember projects I had run or worked on.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As previously mentioned I was given specific projects that I was responsible for, in addition to supporting other larger projects. This enabled me to gain valuable project and time management skills.
