The Role
I really enjoyed this internship. I was working with the Strategic Events team and had never done anything in events before. I helped organise a large conference for Macmillan staff and volunteers. It found it extremely motivating and I learnt the new skills I was looking for. Sometimes the workload was a little overwhelming but generally it was very good.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. I was asked to set up induction meetings with each member of the team so I knew what was expected of me and what I could expect from them in return. They included me in team correspondence such as WhatsApp messages and I attended lots of meetings to help me understand my department.
I had lots of people to turn to if I needed help. I had my intern managers, a line manager and I was assigned a 'buddy' within the team. I was also assigned a mentor who I met for coffee and emailed for advice about job hunting. I was also encouraged to take part in courses and hot desk in different teams to see what I found most interesting in the organization.
Really busy! I did find that doing the internship part time was tricky as there was so much to learn and achieve that I couldn't fit it into 3 days. However I found people were so positive and really wanted to do a good job for Macmillan, that this was very infectious and I felt very motivated to do a really good job.
I had a lot of responsibility and was mostly left alone to complete my work. However I met with my line manager each week to discuss what I had achieved and she helped guide me on decisions and helped me decide the next best steps to take. I appreciated this as I was helping to organize a very big event.
This was a great internship which taught me fantastic working skills in IT, networking, organization, internet research, team working and more. It gave me plenty to talk about in interviews and tonput on my CV, and I ultimately got a paid job in the organization. I would really recommend it.
The Company
The atmosphere was good. I found everyone to be very positive and friendly. I was encouraged to talk to people and everyone was more than willing to offer their help and advice. The office had a nice vibe, there were even beds to chill out on on one of the floors!
Really well organized. I was told on my first day what to expect and how to attend training courses. Then I received emails when I had been assigned a mentor or when I had to register for courses or inductions. The interns were encouraged to set up their own WhatsApp group so we could help each other out if someone couldn't find the correct meeting room etc.
I felt the organization really invested in me. It definitely felt like a two way street. I was helping them and they were giving me lots of skills to take with me and use to my advantage in the job market. The only problem was that I was often not in on the days of some training courses.
I was encouraged to apply for internal jobs and in my interview it was great that I felt relaxed because I knew a lot about the organization already and what would be expected of me. I still had to go through all the usual channels of application forms and tests, but I think my experience there did help.
The Culture
All the interns got to know each other and we were asked to complete a fundraising project. This brought us all together and we met up at lunch sometimes to discuss it. We didn't meet up after work but this didn't bother me, we all lived quite far from the centre.
Central London so very expensive. However I did have my travel expenses and much paid for up to a value of £7. So this helped a lot and I could even go out with my team mates and put the food on my expenses which was nice. Every little helps!
I have no idea! We didn't go out after work in that way. I wasn't bothered by this but I was older than the other interns, so maybe they were a bit disappointed. If it was important to you I'm sure this could be instigated if you wanted to invite others out after work.
Not really. I think that the internship was so busy there really wasn't much time for doing things outside of work. They have a large in take of interns each year so it would be difficult and complicated to invite interns onto netball teams etc, but I'm sure you would be welcome if there was something you really wanted to get involved in.
