    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. Having just graduated from university I found I was well suited to working from home most days. I loved the variance of activities in the role and the steady stream of challenges to complete.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There is a good community spirit amongst other placement students. I was remote working from Essex and so was slightly more removed from that but everyone was very friendly and appreciative and interested in one another's achievements

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line managers were very approachable and were able to answer any questions I had. They also gave me a lot of recognition for my successes and even gave me ideas on where I should look to next.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy enough but not so busy that I was snowed under constantly. Ultimately in this internship the work you achieve is ultimately what you have found for yourself in many cases so I was able to give myself the ideal amount of work

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a good level of responsibility and as I gained the trust of my line managers this responsibility was increased. For example, rather than liaising with clients through my managers I ended up directly communicating and organising volunteers or clients. I was also put in charge of arranging and presenting talks to various groups and associations

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Having finished my degree I would not want to comment on that too much. The presentations I have done would have definitely helped out with final year presentations had I still been at university. It is invaluable experience for entry into fundraising specifically but also into the charity sector. This sort of experience is very hard to come by.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was working from home most days. That suited me very well but I can appreciate that it wouldn't suit others well. When I met with others once a week, the atmosphere there was great, open and fun.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • IT issues at the start of the placement led to a delay in starting off. However, overall it was well organised with fortnightly updates to all placement students keeping everyone in the loop and all the events were good fun and well run.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Personal training and development was very much on the job in my case. There were training events available but these were mostly in London. An intern online training portal would have been helpful. The development support from line managers and people in general was really great however.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They are very appealing and the high turnover means that there are lots of roles available. An issue remains that the most sought after roles are the entry roles. Once in the organisation movement between departments seems to happen frequently so that is promising.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I went on one social which was really great. Socially it would have been better had I been based in head office in London. I could have been more involved socially if I wished but that wasn't really my focus.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I worked from home. All transport was paid as part of the internship and lunches were paid for to. So the cost of living was very low.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I was working from home so terrible but that is expected and does not reflect Macmillan Cancer Support or other interns experiences there as it is based on where I live.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Plenty of opportunities. This has been one of the best parts of the internship. I have done lots of talks at schools, rotary clubs, bowls clubs. Been involved in focus groups. Done collections at supermarkets and even with Santas sleigh with a local fundraising team. Its really great to meet people who are also passionate about the cause and meet people with cancer experiences, very inspiring
