    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed it. It has taught me so much, and has been a genuinely fun and enlightening experience. The only reason it is not a 10 is because the work load can be a little variable, so there are times where you have to try and make yourself busy, but for the most part there is always something to be getting on with.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very included by my colleagues both within my team and within the greater office. They did not shy away from including me in conversations related to both work and also their personal life. There was also a weekly coffee and cake morning on fridays and they allowed me to join when I was working then, and that was across the entire office.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Any time I needed help (and that was quite a lot at the start) they would help me and answer any questions I had. They also made time to talk to me when I needed to review how I was doing in both my internship and in general, which really helped in my learning experience.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This was probably one of the weaker aspects of the internship, though by no means was it still bad. The work load was variable; there were a few occassions where I would not have anything to do, and then other times I would be extremely busy, but I feel that this is just part of a genuine work environment, and the reasons for my work load being variable were beyond the control of my managers, for example, Macmillan gets busier nearer to their big event, World's Biggest Coffee Morning, but that is understandable that they will be busier as that gets nearer, as there is a lot of work involved in doing this.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Many of the projects I was given I was very much left to complete independantly, unless I needed to be shown how to do it, and even then, I was shown how and then expected to do it myself. This was very good, as sometimes it can be quite weird having someone loom over your shoulder, and if you do mess up a little, you can correct your mistake quickly and discreetly without feeling like an idiot because someone is watching you.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I had been thinking about a career in fundrasing beforehand, and this internship has not only affirmed that thought but given me so many of the skills I would need, as well as knowledge onthe internal structure of Macmillan and a general awareness on how charities operate.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Obviously in all offices there are moments of quiet, otherwise there would never be any work done, but there is still a nice balance of chit chat and work. Members of my team would always offer to make me drinks, or offer me the staff biscuits as well. It just felt genuinely welcoming, not forced at all.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Macmillan takes on a relatively huge amount of interns, and as such they have a great scheme in place, as well as guidelines for line managers to use when taking interns on board and how often to meet with them they also know what kinds of things that they should provide for interns. They have considered that students and the people doing their internship are probably not going to be the most well off people generally, and so re-imburse travel and lunch expenses. This is just one example of how they consider the needs of their interns and put measures in place to provide the best possible support for them.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company offered access to all their training days for interns, with priority being for paid staff however. These things were offered in the london office, and I was working in the regional team, so it was a little out of the way for me to go. But I do feel that I learned a lot of skills just by being in the job, and I feel like these skills are very helpful.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Macmillan Cancer Support is a huge charity, and so they have great potential to hire their interns. Most of these opportunities will likely be down in London, as that is where the majority of positions are based.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Because most of the interns are down in London, I felt a little out of the loop in terms of socials, and they of course all took place there, and I did not have the money or time to do them. My colleagues here however have included me a few times in going to lunch when they all went together, once even being for my leaving lunch.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived with my parents, as I was at home from university at the time, and the internship was nearby, so it just made sense, and so i didnt really have to pay money for living expenses.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I live on a farm, just outside of a village, 20 miles away from York. So I dont really feel like this question applies to me very well.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Again, I live on a farm, just outside of a village, 20 miles away from York. So I dont really feel like this question applies to me very well.
