    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at Macmillan and it's been a really valuable experience for future employment.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My department s quite small (7 other people) so I got to know everyone quickly and felt comfortable asking any of them for help.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very helpful offering guidance and chasing up my questions. I also had a member of staff outside of my own department working as a mentor, who again was helpful and offered constructive advice.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most days I had project work or research to do. There were a few quiet afternoons (like when I'd just finished a project) but I found things to do on the Macmillan skills website.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was wholly resposnible for researching, writing and completing my two projects. I liked having my own project to work on at my own pace - as the only intern in the department I was fully responsible for it.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I'd never worked in an office before coming to Macmillan so it was a good experience to have. I also developed my office, IT and administration skills. I've already finished my degree so can't say it the internship assisted my degree.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Office was busy but calm most days - there was a buzz but it was never stressful. On Fridays it was much quieter as some people took the day off or went home early - having said that though I only had worked one Friday in the office.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • At the beginning I had an induction with all the other interns which set out what the internship was for.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There's a really good online learnzone, "lunch & learn" training sessions and a mentoring scheme - all of which I took advantage of. However, it wasn't pushed on you - these facilities were there if you wanted to pursue them. It's more about choosing to do the personal development activties yourself.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Travel loan

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely consider working with Macmillan in the future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I made friends with some other interns on my floor and we often go to lunch together. There have been a few social events for all of the interns but as I don't live in London I haven't attended any.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I don't live in London and commute in, but London rents are famously expensive.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Never gone out in London, again as I don't love here.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are exercise sessions like yoga at lunch but I didn't get involved.

    3/5
