The Role
I have really enjoyed this placement. It has been a great insight to the world of work and its processes. I have developed so much in such a short space of time and I am really grateful to McDonald's for allowing me to do so.
You really feel like part of the team rather than just an intern which is pertinent to your development and happiness.
I was given a lot of personal support, especially in the first few months as there was so much to learn. I was offered many training opportunities also to develop my skills.
Overall the balance of work was great. As with any job, some days were really busy and others not so much. They key is organisation and learning to prioritize the workload.
Compared to others on different placement schemes, I was very privileged to be given a lot of responsibility. I would communicate with Franchisees when necessary and perform tasks of high importance. It is important to note that your trust has to be earned as I have definitely gained responsibility throughout the year.
I really feel that I have developed as an individual above anything else which has given me a lot more confidence in every day life. The training I received was fantastic, I could do anything I wanted and was not restricted to a certain number of courses. The experience will help me no end in my final year of study as I will be able to relate Marketing theory to real life examples. In terms of beyond, gaining a years work experience in one of the most reputable brands in the world before graduating will help me no end.
The Company
The atmosphere was great. Everyone in the team worked hard but played hard also so it was very upbeat.
It was very well organised. The placement scheme has been running for a while so there has been time to perfect it. The first few months included special training for those on placement which was really useful. There is a network of placement students which is really handy as everyone is in the same boat.
They were really great. The training courses were fabulous and helped an enormous amount. I attended a presentation skills, excel skills and a communications course.

There are quite a few people in the organisation who have previously completed a placement year with McDonald's so many people do come back. The only thing is that there isn't a Graduate scheme so it will depend if there is a vacancy at the time you are looking.
The Culture
It was great. Everyone got on really well and it really helped me settle in the first couple of months as everyone was in the same boat. We even all went on a weekend away together!
The cost of living is high as the office is based in London. However, the office is in zone 3 and many placement students live near here which is cheaper than central London.
There isn't really many places to go out around the office so we normally just hop on the tube and go into central London where there are so many places to go. There are few pubs near the office which have a great pub quiz & beer garden so it gets visited frequently!
There were a few opportunities but not a huge amount. McDonald's have an in house charity- Ronald McDonald Housing Charity who offer many opportunities for you to get involved with them but there aren't really any sport opportunities for example.
