The Role
I was given such interesting tasks to do, and there was such comraderie between the other interns which meant lunchtimes and after work were a laugh as well.
Some of my team were lovely, very grateful for my time & welcoming, others were not so much and basically ignored me taking the view that I wouldn't be there long so there was no point being friendly. It didn't really affect my enjoyment of the internship or what I got out of it, but it was a shame. I think this was a specific issue to my team rather than across Macmillan.
Macmillan has a mentoring system which interns can sign up for and this was fantastic for me - my mentor went over my CV, gave me mock interviews and was very supportive. My team varied in terms of support, but most were happy to help with job applications.
I always had enough to do everyday, and it bordered on too much, but this was definitely a good thing as it reflected the real world of work, and allowed me to practice prioritising!
I had my own project that I worked on collaboratively with two other team members, but within this I had areas that were solely my responsibility, which was really good.
I definitely learnt lots of useful skills, and have constantly used the skills I learnt and the experiences I had as examples in interviews. I developed time management, communication, team work - all of which are very transferable.
The Company
My team in particular were very quiet and didn't often socialise, but across the office as a whole there was often cake and laughter, so I would say Macmillan as a whole would deserve a 9/10, but my team was perhaps too busy to do this.
The intern manager at Macmillan was fantastic - he set out clear guidelines for every team to follow and was adamant that every intern should have their own project and responsibility.
I was given lots of responsibility and independence to develop my skills, but I perhaps could have been sent on more training courses.
I would definitely be interested in working for Macmillan in the future
The Culture
We had an intern social manager who organised lots of fun socials, and we all got on well. We went for lunch most days, and to the pub after work.
I lived at home, and commuted into London, which would have been expensive but Macmillan paid for my travel. In terms of socialising - Macmillan contributed £5 a day to food which I could use if I went to lunch, and most of my team would buy me a drink if we went for an external meeting.
London is full of nightclubs, but I didn't really take advantage of them - I was too tired after work!
All interns were invited to join sporting teams, quiz teams etc alongside other employees.
