The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with Macmillan Cancer Support and it confirmed that I would like to start a career in the charity sector.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. I had a great professional relationship with my managers and they treated me like part of the team.
I was given fantastic support by my managers as they were always available to contact if I needed them. There were weekly team meetings to catch up on the work we were doing and also 1 to 1 meetings with my line manager.
I worked 5 days a week and usually 2 or 3 of those days would be working from home. The workload varied a lot and became especially busy the closer it came to the World's Biggest Coffee Morning.
I was given a lot of support during the first month of my placement and was not given too much responsibility as I was getting used to the IT and ways of the charity. However, by the end of the placement I feel that it really balanced out as I was given a lot of responsibility and worked very independently.
I am a graduate so the placement has not assisted in my degree, although I am now considering doing a postgraduate course in marketing to further enhance my career prospects. The placement has confirmed that I would like to work in the charity sector, especially in a fundraising or marketing role.
The Company
This is not applicable as my internship was mobile based. However, the meetings I attended were always very positive and had a friendly atmosphere.
It was mostly very well organised, both from UKO and my local team. However, there were IT issues and some expenses issues.
I really feel that the regional fundraising team invested a lot of time and effort into my personal training and development. At the start, I needed a lot of support as if I was starting a new job, and spent a few weeks shadowing managers and asking lots of questions. By the end of the internship, I felt like I had developed lots of new skills and understood the way the charity worked.
National Travel
Working from home
Most of the job opportunities are based in the London UK Office, however if regional opportunities do come up I feel that my internship experience would help me in the employment process.
The Culture
I was mobile based and so did not see the other Welsh interns very often. However, Macmillan organised my travel to London to be with the other interns which was good. I also met UKO and regional interns at the organised Internship Get Togethers in London.
There was not much socialising, but food and drink was fairly cheap.
The nightlife is really good in South Wales, however it is not really applicable to this placement.
I got involved with events outside of my duties, such as the Gower Macmarathon and attended some events planned by other regional teams.
