The Role
I greatly enjoyed my internship with Macmillan. Working for the charity has helped me to realise the fantastic work that they do, and has given me great insight into what work in the third sector involves.
My colleagues always made the effort to include me in team meetings, and encouraged me to become involved in projects which they were each responsible for leading.
My line-manager was extremely supportive throughout my internship. We had regular weekly meetings to discuss how I was finding the work, and every effort was made to help me develop.
I was usually pretty busy, though as with any internship there were days when I was less busy than others.
I was deemed competent and given a lot of responsibility to carry out tasks to the best of my ability under my own initiative.
The skills I developed during my internship were invaluable.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was great. People were very friendly and encouraging and always made the effort to explain what they did if you asked them.
The internship scheme was well co-ordinated, with opportunities to feedback on how the placement was going at the beginning and end of my time spent there. The scheme was so well organised that there were a huge number of interns employed while I was there.
My line manager set personal development goals with me at the start of my internship, and we reviewed these regularly. I was also encouraged to attend training courses off site to further my skills in the field.
Sports and Social Club
Many of the interns find themselves employed (not necessarily directly) after the internships. Showing willing and interest in the organisation really counts for a lot in the future.
The Culture
There were a large number of interns of university age on the scheme, as well as socials taking place which were organised by interns and which all interns were invited to.
Basic expenses were paid so it wasn't too costly.
There were a good selection of pubs in the area.
There were sports practices and baking activities taking place during my time there.
