The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed it! There was support but you were able to take your own ideas and work on them.
Everything I did was seen as a huge favour as the placement was voluntary. They never undervalued anything. I felt like a proper part of the team, not at all just like a fleeting intern!
Anything I needed support with or help I knew that I not only had my direct Manager who I could turn to but also the two other fundraising managers and their manager too! They were a fantasticly supportive team!
Sometimes a little too busy, but this was my fault, not the placements! I wanted to experience everything and so never said no to any of the tasks offered to me!
If I wanted to take responsibility for something then I was given free reign, but I was certainly not running the show. The whole team pulled together to create the show. No one person was directly responsible!
I truly believe that the skills that I have developed over the course of this internship will help me not only get a job in the future, but will help me once I am in one!
The Company
I was a remote worker and thus did not have an office - this meant that my office was home (where you had to be quite disciplined to get things done) or coffee shops with other Macmillan employees or volunteers! It was perfect except it did sometimes lead to IT difficulties (if you are a Mac user tell Macmillan that you will need a laptop to be a remote worker!)
I was sent down to London for my starter pack and had a further two London trips. The first was very useful and we got all of the things that we needed for our internships and taught a lot of what we needed to know, however the middle London meeting seemed a little pointless for someone to travel all the way down from Scotland for (and very expensive for a charity) but I made the most of it by setting up meetings with interesting people from the London offices.
I have been on so many training courses, both general and specific! They have been brilliant about my personal development and have even given me a mentor who will help me even once the placement is done!
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Unfortunately I have another year of University to go, but I would take a job with Macmillan in a heart beat!
The Culture
As we were all remote workers over Scotland and Ireland it was quite tricky to meet up, however we kept in contact via phone calls and email alot and meeting the London office interns on the trips down south was a definite highlight!
No different that living here as a student, it didn't cost me any more than normal living costs to be an intern with Macmillan.
Brilliant pubs and bars as well as clubs if you like that sort of thing.
Not many, there were in London, it's just that being a remote worker in Scotland for an English organisation is trickier.
