    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • American Express is a great company to do your placement or internship. The people are great, you learn alot and you get a real feel of what its like to work in the corporate environment as opposed to a 'manufactured' experience

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The people here put great value on employees and look to support and help to develop all employees, even interns

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager, director and even VP were always there for me whenever I had any queries or needed help, now this doesn't mean that people hold your hand, you'll be required to think for yourself and work independently, but help is there whenever required

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Difficult to answer due to the ambiguity that is involved in finance. During Month-End you can quite easily work 12 hours, but the average time otherwise is 9am-6pm. My team was very busy, other interns left the office at 5pm. But what is good is the fact that there is no facetime, you finish your work, and you're free to leave, so you don't have to sit here looking pretty until 10pm as you do in other banks

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are given a project which you have to design and conduct, and then present the findings to your VP and presentation to other interns and senior leaders. The project is something that your team hasn't done, so everything you conduct is valuable to the team and the responsibility to create that value comes down to you!

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • An internship is a practical experience, and at American Express you get a hands on experience into what its like to work in the finance industry, you learn on the job and put those new skills into practice straight away. In contrast, degree studies are theoretical, but alot of what you learn in your degree does not neccesserily enhance your internship, as all companies have their own way of doing things, however the experience you gain from your internship definately enhances your degree

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • At American Express, a day never goes by when you don't hear someone laughing in the office. The people here are really nice, and we're all a big family to be honest. That said, this doesn't mean we're jokers. We get down to serious business when we need to, but we're not afraid of acting as humans, unlike the robots you see in Investment Banking

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Given that it is only the 2nd year of the Summer Programme, I am stunned at how well organised the internship experience has been, everything has gone without a hitch. The HR staff are well experienced in putting together Undergraduate and Graduate recruitment programmes, and it shows.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a 2 day induction to get to grips with excel and the company, and then speaker sessions on a weekly basis in which someone from a different business unit teaches you about their role and division. Your team will teach you about your business line, and then you are left to conduct your project independently, but your team will be there for you to ask any questions and put any ideas forward

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    Healthcare from home

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Tricky question. Within American Express prospects are very good, as there is emphasis put on lateral movement to learn new skills, so new jobs are always coming up. The finance industry itself however is very volatile at the moment

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The HR staff organised weekly events such as a ride on the London Eye, trips to the theatre, pizza making and bowling, so the interns had alot of time to bond. We also organised lunches and post-work drinks too, I think its safe to say I've make some very close friends during this experience

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London Price. Enough Said

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London Nightlife. Enough said....although be prepared to spend more than somewhere like Leeds or Manchester

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Tons of activties, central london has great amenities, from theatres, to nightclubs, to sports clubs. Whatever you want, we've got it here in London
