    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really loved it, it was an incredible opportunity and offers more responsibility than traditional placements. I was treat like a member of the team, not an intern. They did everything they could to make sure I got the most from the experience, including letting me present to major grocery multiple accounts and manage exciting projects. The consumer office has a really lively and friendly atmosphere.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Every one at SC Johnson is incredibly welcoming and friendly. If you have a problem, or a project you would like to get involved in, I do not think twice about asking a colleague. There is no hierarchy but an open door policy, I will often go into the Marketing Director's office to ask him questions, or just have a chat. As an intern as SC Johnson, you're not treated like a temp but a valued an respected member of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I can only speak for the Marketing Team, but my supervision was incredible. In the first six months, my manager trained me, providing me with business skills and the confidence to assert myself. In the last 6 months, when I was ready, I was given some really exciting projects to lead. I had weekly one-to-ones with my manager where he coached me on how I was doing and how I could improve. My manager took my development seriously, which ensured that I got the most from my placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The team at SC Johnson is so lean that you are an integral part of the team and get given a lot of responsibility. I worked on projects that an intern on other placements would never get involved in. As well as my own projects, I was also busy doing my weekly tasks or ad hoc requests. I never had a boring day on my placement and was always busy doing things that look great on my CV.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • SC Johnson are amazing at arming you with some great things to put on your CV. As soon as you prove yourself, you have the opportunity to get involved in everything and anything. It is what you make of it. If you ask to present some NPD to Sainsbury's, the liklihood is, they'll say 'yes'. Not many other placements will place such trust and responsibility in their interns.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I wish all students could do a placement here because the experience is invaluable. I have listed some, of the many skills, that I obtained. - Skill in presenting, both externally and internally. - Experience with the key Marketing databases- SC Johnson enroll you on Dunhumby and Nielsen training regularly. - Networking- I was invited to events (i.e. British Brands networking event) where I was given the opportunity to network with senior people from other businesses. - Provided with an understanding of how a global business operates. - You work cross-functionally, so you gain insight into the roles of sales, finance, customer services. - Enrolled on advanced computer training, which helped me use Microsoft Office in a business context.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and lively. Within my marketing pod, there was never a day that I didn't laugh. However, obviously, it isn't all fun and games because it is a working environment and we're all there to do our job.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I couldn't fault it. SC Johnson has employed interns for years, so the process is seamless.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I have mentioned, the interns are enrolled on advanced computer training and data base courses. SC Johnson invest a lot of time and money into the interns, as they are a key resource, so they need to ensure they are armed with all the skills to help grow the company.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • SC Johnson do not have a graduate scheme as such, so they use their placement scheme as a way to recruit graduates. Prior to me, every marketing intern works within SC Johnson, either in the UK or in our Head Office in Switzerland.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The office is based in the suburbs, so it isn't a "London experience". However, if you have a car, there are plenty of places for the interns to go after work.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It is definitely cheaper than London but, as a Northerner, it is still 'southern' in terms of cost. However, I found a very affordable place to live and I walked to work- so it definitely is do-able on a budget.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I have said, it is based in a suburban area, so the night-life isn't great. However, there is a nearby town, called Camberley, which has pubs and clubs.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • In terms of work activities outside of work hours, It is what you make of it. If you ask to attend customer meetings and events then the answer will generally be 'yes'. If you're prepared to put yourself out there and ask to get involved in things, there are lots of opportunities. In terms of social activities, there is a very good social team who regularly organise events, including easter egg hunts, quizzes and parties. Also there are three fitness classes a week (Zumba, Yoga and Combat), which is payed for by the company.
