The Role
Aspects of the work were very enjoyable, including the responsibility given.
Small teams internally so you get to know your close colleagues well.
Door always open to help out and if not in the office, always at the end of an email. Colleagues always around to lend a helping hand if needed as well.
Variable - many days you would be kept busy 110%, other days you have to find additional work to do. If you ran out, there was usually something to take off of someone else's workload to help with.
Due to small team, more responsibility than many internships in larger organisations would likely offer.
Training offered at start of year very useful. Time management and feedback scheme useful for future work. Performance appraisal system established at end of placement year which is applied to all future internships to guide your progress through the year should be good.
The Company
Very small team managing entire UK company, so very work-focused. Only intern in department, so you get to know your colleagues more.
Over course of year, new systems put into place to greatly improve internship experience. Biggest improvement is introduction of performance appraisal system to provide feedback over the internship to help you get most out of year.
Microsoft Office training at start of year and a short training session on Charitable activities linked to the works of the Charitable Trust. Majority of training comprised of on-the-job learning.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
No established graduate scheme. If vacancy arises that may be suitable for a previous intern, possibility of a graduate role, but highly dependent on needs of the company at the time.
The Culture
Small number of interns in company and didn't really see anyone during the working day or after. Mostly interacted with colleagues in own department.
Renting in Frimley relatively cheap compared to Guildford. Socialising...see below.
Frimley/Camberley has relatively little in terms of night life. Close to Guildford (direct train to Guildford or 20 minute drive), so can go out of an evening there then taxi back or whatever.
Main activity was football every Friday afternoon (work finishes at 1 so opportunity to do stuff on a Friday afternoon). Aside from that, not much else. As before, close to Guildford so if you're a student at Guildford can easily get SSP membership and do stuff there on a Friday afternoon before hitting the clubs.
