    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I work under the guidance of the Senior Account Representative Andy Essex and find myself involved with all aspects of the business including Order management, Business Analytics, Customer Services and on multiple occasions have been involved with the customer interface/tours within the plant showing them around the plant and answering any questions they have. I prepare detailed Customer/Distributor Score Cards for review on a monthly and quarterly basis every morning and have been expanding to do work higher up the business ladder for the reginal supply chain manager Ahmad. I collate data attributed to the business using Oracle/Excel and provide reports to worldwide customers especially countries like India and America. I must research various attributes of the plant using Oracle/Excel and I liaise with various departments in the creation of reports like the Quality department and Supply Chain. I collaborate with internal teams to understand customer orders and requisitions often finding myself as part of team to get the job done, we must collate received orders in a timely manner and support with the distribution of completed orders.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I believe I have grown as a business student through my time at Cummins and have been always open to try new things and develop my skills. When I first joined the company, I had never used a software package called Oracle and this is a key part of my working schedule as I must use this to open all the reports daily. I had to learn from those around me and learn this program as soon as I could and was required to ask a lot of questions, this pushed me out of comfort zone and forces me to become more confident in a team and to improve my analytical skills. As I settled into the year at Cummins, I was found will little do as I had found many ways to speed up my scheduled work as I did a small online course on Excel Shortcuts which speed up my work and improved my overall knowledge of Excel. I asked for more work from my manager so I could learn different skills and meet new people to expand my skills outside of my department. I liaised with my Department Leader and she and I found some more jobs which would benefit everyone in the business and make some business processes more efficient in the future. I also went around the departments in the office and asked the leads whether they needed any extra analysis doing and now I do reports for people around the whole office. This experience improved my knowledge of the market a lot and my social skills were improved and settling into the work environment was a huge step up from normal university life but after these 5 months I have now has settled in. During these 5 months I’ve noticed I have a lot of strengths which is have developed over years from playing semi-professional rugby at Loughborough which lend themselves to working life, for example, good time management and getting tasks done on time/ early which is great for business as everything is on time scale and need to be done when asked. Also, Good Planning it is key to being organized and not forgetting any appointments/tasks, I’ve had to develop these over my time at Loughborough and have been very useful in working life.

This a very full on placement and you will be left alone to get on with many tasks that are vital to business operations on a daily basis.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Over the past 13 months I have noticed that in business world you must know everything you produce and talk about while also having fun. Therefore I’d say one of the most important things I need to focus on would be to learn abit more about the other business departments like Finance and Production Planning and also to have a good time and make sure I'm in a good business environment like cummins to really excel in my career. i have loved my time at cummins and would highly suggest.
