    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day to day basis, I would have to frequently organize and save emails to Aon's system. Provide a weekly log on any updates of incoming queries, use excel systems to calculate figures for member's pensions, and process and create audit trails for these calculations. I would attend 4-5 meetings with both colleagues and interns from other offices. Spend 2-3 hours a week working on Aon impact internal summer project.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have increased my actuarial knowledge of consultancy work and how the structure of Aon works as a business. I have further developed my existing excel knowledge and learnt new systems within excel, PowerPoint and word. I have increased my effectiveness regarding time management and critical thinking skills. Additionally, I engaged in multiple group activities and task, which further enhanced my collaboration and interpersonal skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • In my opinion, the responsibility given was varied. At the beginning of the internship, there was not many tasks given to me where I could be given an responsibility. However, during my summer internship, many colleagues took annual leave, which allowed for me to show responsibility in a few areas. It should be noted, that if my internship was longer or if I opted for a placement year, I definitely would have been given more responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a fair amount of support from colleagues during my internship. Sometimes it may have been difficult when certain colleagues were on annual leave or working remotely. However, overall I would say that any questions I had were answered with clarity. All the staff were extremely friendly and made me feel comfortable throughout.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The St Albans office is fairly small, and with most of the office adopting hybrid work sometimes the office was extremely quiet. There were not many social events after work, so it would suggest to me that the general atmosphere of colleagues were constantly busy. However, the company culture on Aon as a whole seems active and vibrant, like in the London office for example.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my summer internship, because I have met some really amazing people and their stories, and developed a broader knowledge of insurance and pensions. I enjoyed the general day-to day tasks, and although some may have been challenging, it kept me engaged and active to explore more.

  • The advice I would give to others applying for Aon is, be your authentic self, show that your passionate about the role and take up every opportunity offered to you throughout the internship. During the application stages, make sure you are honest about your efforts and achievements, and make lots of time for preparation leading up to things such as the assessment centre. Overall, try to stay positive and try your best.
