    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Various programming tasks in Java using reactive style programming. Utilise agile development techniques to intergrate with an existing codebase. Network and learn from senior members of the company. Visualise and display metrics for existing applications. Present our work through a mixture of different presentations Attend daily standups with a hosting engineer team. Take part in business unit breakdowns and senior speaker series.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have greatly improved both my presentation skills and my professional skills. From a technical perspective I have bolstered my knowledge of programming with a new reactive paradigm. Additionally through talks with senior members I have improved my domain and business knowledge. By speaking to people from a variety of different roles I have improved my understanding of how different roles in the company intergrate.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a fair amount of responsibility. Our team of interns has been left to our own devices to develop requirements and implement them. We were delegated the task of communicating with product owners.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • We recieved a lot of support and guidance with regards to the communication with upper management. Senior members of the department were very friendly and willing to talk through any issues or queries that we might raise. Additionally the inclusion of short daily standups allowed us to have many opportunities to raise any concerns.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very positive. There is an atmosphere of openness and continuous development that made me feel immediately comfortable. There was no pressure with regards to timing or dress code, and with the flexible working from home scheme I felt like I was able to be in control of my own schedule.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed it for the most part. My main issues came with the actual software development aspect of the placement. I felt that there was relatively little in the way of truly logical puzzles or tasks that pushed my technical abilities. This made that aspect of the placement a little tedious.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to American Express
  • Treat the internship or placement as a more general placement. Do not go into it with a fixed mindset of what tasks you will be doing and allow yourself to try new things. Take the opportunity to meet with people from a variety of backgrounds and roles to allow for your own personal growth
