    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am an actuarial consultant working with the retirement team. I help my team out with tasks such as valuations, cross checking data and anything else they need a bit of help with. Over the 9 weeks we also have to complete a project with a group of other interns for one of Aon's Business Resource Groups (I am working with the Workability BRG) to try and bring more members in and spread awareness. We have to create a 15 minute presentation and a 2 minute video.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have found it really beneficial working in the office almost every day surrounded by colleagues as it has helped me get into the working mindset and really get a feel of how a company runs. I also feel I have gained a much better understanding to what the role of an actuary involves and what skills are needed for it. The internship has made me much better at sticking to a routine that works for me and to manage my time efficiently. Really learning how to prioritise different tasks.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • In some ways yes and in some ways no. I have been given tasks in which I feel I have been dealing with matters of fairly high importance and they have trusted me to do them by myself or alongside other interns and I had also been told that they trust me to make my own judgement. So for those especially I felt I had a lot of responsibility. But there have also been times I have felt there's a lot of stuff I am simply not able to do just because I am not qualified although I would not blame that on Aon.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I felt the support was second to none. Although I wasn't constantly given support (majorly because I was contempt in the tasks I was doing), throughout the experience I was told to never hesitate to ask questions and reach out to people for assistance which was very reassuring. At the end of any meetings/talks we had, we were always told by our coordinator [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] that if we had any questions/queries at all, we should contact her. Most people I spoke to uttered the same message.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I believe the company culture/community was one of Aon's best assets. Throughout my internship I really got the impression that the company really strived to include every single person no matter their circumstances. Their BRG's seem to be really beneficial and have helped many colleagues to feel safe and included, in and outside of the workplace. I always felt I could be myself without judgement and everyone I either met or spoke to were always super friendly and inviting.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Aon as an intern. My initial impressions were that it would be quite intense and stressful due to Aon being such a large company but that was not the case at all. I was always given time to complete my tasks and clear deadlines for anything I did so I could plan my time accordingly. The whole atmosphere was so inviting and friendly which made it a real joy to work and I never dreaded it (which I did expect). The line of work doesn't hugely interest me (but that is just a personal preference and nothing to do with Aon as a company) but if there was a role that suited me more then Aon would definitely be a top choice.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Aon
  • My main bit of advice would be that there is honestly no need to be worried or stressed for it at any stage. Even at the start with the interview process I felt I did so much better by just staying calm as everyone was so friendly and they really want you to just be yourself. You are given a good level of responsibility but there are no questions you can't ask, even if that is towards someone in a senior role.
