    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working with people in the office on their client teams on a range of work. The types of work vary depending on who is delegating to you but at an entry level the majority of work will be on queries. I have also done administration tasks and used lots of existing models.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot about the work of actuaries on a daily basis. I have significantly improved my Excel and communication skills. I have also learnt new skills including new calculations ( eg CETVs) and use of models.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given responsibility for my own tasks and given deadlines by the people delegating the work to me. It is important to stick to these deadlines as others are relying on the work that you do.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of support from my manager in relation to soft skills. With the client work I was given, the graduates gave me a lot of support as they have just started and understand what it's like learning things from scratch.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • There is a great atmosphere on team days, people will talk to you in the office and I was invited to all social functions during my internship. On non-team days there aren't many people in the office so it can be very quiet on those days.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I found it a slow start in the first couple of weeks with getting IT setup and finding my feet with work but following this I was busy throughout and found my time really interesting. I enjoyed my internship as it gave me a great insight into the actuarial role.

  • The application process for the internship is long so be sure that this is something you want to do and are committed to. Once you get the role my advice is to put yourself out there and speak to everyone as this is how you get work.
