Overview
I am part of a scrum team of 4 interns, embedded within a wider team of engineers. We were assigned a project to build a mobile app from scratch. We have biweekly sprints with the products owners and daily stand-up meetings to discuss progress, allocate tasks, and work on further functionality.
Skills
I have significantly improved my coding skills, Java, and SQL. I have learned how to work with Springboot, create APIs and work with remote databases. I have also learned how to test software using JUnit and local databases. In terms of interpersonal skills, I had the opportunity to improve my networking skills through extensive opportunities to meet colleagues and build a network.
Responsibilities
My team was working in a proof of concept project, so it wasn't a business critical project. However, we had great autonomy to plan and deliver our project as we thought appropriate, and we were offered valuable feedback that we were expected to implement. Stakeholders treated the project as important and were generous with their time and advice.
Support & Guidance
We had a team of engineers to turn to when we faced issues, but we were not spoonfed and were expected to be very independent and self-sufficient. Some more structure and / or targeted technology tutorials on the tech stack we would use would have felt more reassuring at the start, but we got there in the end and this approach forced us to learn a lot very quickly.
Culture
Fantastic culture and atmosphere! Everyone is friendly, welcoming and genuinely cares. The internship project managers have gone above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience, and every single colleague has been supportive and generous with their time. There were multiple social events and networking opportunities where interns could mingle with permanent staff as well.
Your Impressions
It's been the highlight of my summer! I am gutted it's coming to an end.
